Advantages: Sweets that your taste buds will love.
Disadvantages: Sweets that your dentist will hate.
Here is a list of my top ten all-time favourite sweets harking back to my school days, which are guaranteed to rot and break any mouthful of teeth except for those that are made from Titanium and coated in Diamond dust!!
1) SHERBET LEMONS... A hard as rock, lemon flavoured casing which, when bitten into released the fizzy sherbet centre. They used to stick to the bottom of the bag so when you were eating them you got a mouthful of paper for free as well. Delicious!
2) RAINBOW DROPS... These were circular chocolate flavoured candy buttons with a sprinkling of tiny balls of candy on the one side, similar to the 'tens of thousands' that you sprinkle onto a trifle. The little balls of sprinkle would get stuck hard and fast in your teeth. Yummy!
3) FRUIT SALAD... These actually sound as if they are good for you, but alas, no. Made from a very sticky and chewy substance which were full of sugar, these sweets took some chewing!.Think of cows, cud and continuous chewing action and you'll get the idea. Wrapped in that iconic yellow and pink wrapper, these came in a raspberry and pineapple flavour and the chew would stick to the outside of your teeth for hours on end. Scrummy!
4) KOLA CUBES... These were solid, cola flavoured cubes about 3/4 of an inch square which were coated in sugar. Far too nice to slowly suck on them until they were small enough to manage,we cracked them open immediately with our teeth, revealing the hard, glass-like innards which were as sharp and lethal as plate glass. These shards easily sliced into gum and flesh alike. Delectable!
5) GOBSTOPPERS... Coming in many sizes, these monsters could reach the size of a tennis ball almost. As hard as galvanised steel and completely lethal. The amount of times one nearly slipped down my throat whilst still whole is nobody's business, but still, we put up with the risk for the satisfaction of trying to tame it by sucking it down to a more manageable and crunchable size. Deadly, but heavenly!
6) POPPETS... These came in different varieties including mint and raisin. Sold in those little cardboard boxes which rattled as you rolled them out of the box from a little slot at the top. I much preferred the mint ones which were little nuggets of chocolate filled with a mint flavoured fondant centre.
Excruciatingly pleasurable!
7) SHERBET PIPS... These were tiny balls of pure heaven. You could get about twenty thousand of these hard balls of sherbet in every quarter pound you bought. Of course, far to small to eat just one at a time, it was more prudent to pour a generous handful into the palm, tilt the head back and pour them straight into the mouth trying to avoid a few loose ones from falling straight down the back of the throat.
Being so small, they had the added advantage of easily fitting into a hollowed out pen, thus acting as the perfect missile for your man-made pea shooter! Crunchy and ammunition!
8) SWEET TOBACCO (SPANISH GOLD)... Now these were amazingly tasty pieces of shredded coconut which were dipped in enough brown sugar to please any money hungry dentist. As well as tasting so mouth watering, you could actually 'own' your own tobacco without being scolded by your parents so therefore the pleasure from these delectable and delicate strands was twofold. Doubly delicious!
9) EVERTON MINTS... These were mint flavoured sweets which had a hard outer coating but inside, was surprisingly soft and chewy. Coloured with black and white stripes, the crunchy outer surface and chewy inner, combined with that delicious mint flavour, made this sweet a chewing pleasure of the highest order. Minty mayhem!
10) CHEWING NUTS... These were small chocolate, ball-like sweets which had a chewy toffee centre. The toffee and chocolate combination was a pleasure to behold indeed, and chewing these could take some time, especially if a handful was put in the mouth in one go. They would keep us quiet and content all through school-time due to their long-lasting and chewy toffee deliciousness. Toffee heaven!
Summary: Sweet and delicious, but a price to pay for the pleasure!
