Advantages: British TV at it's best
Disadvantages: So many good one's had to be missed out
Well where to start I have been watching TV almost since the day it was invented, and there are so many memorable characters I could easily fit into this category. Since I'm going to have to whittle them down, some favourites will obviously have to be omitted.
I’m going to do this is reverse order starting at 10 and finishing at one, just to try and add a little suspense. LOL

Whilst pacing the streets of Albert Square he served menace to all who got in his way, he was the number one TV baddie for years, until his apparent demise. Then just like Bobby in Dallas or a bad penny he turned up a few years ago to reek havoc yet again. Played by Leslie Grantham Dirty Den AKA Dennis Watts of Eastenders was the undisputed Bad Boy of TV for years.

Nine also happens to be a comedy character, this time being the infamous Norman Stanley Fletcher AKA Ronnie Barker from Porridge. This probably for me shows Barker at his best and again with the pairing of yet another star Richard Beckinsdale has me in endless laughter. The writers have obviously got to take the credit for the actual script but it takes a true comic genius to carry the project through. On occasions Barker doesn’t actually have to do anything to raise a laugh, just a simple gesture and you know exactly what he intends to portray.

Eight takes us nearer to the present day with a trip to Star Trek the Next Generation, and the new Captain of the Enterprise, Jean Luc Picard AKA Patrick Stewart. For me Jean Luc is the kind of Captain you’d be prepared to follow to the ends of the earth or the Universe in this case. His exceptional performances in this Sci-Fi classic are one of the main reasons for it’s success, he makes it all seem so real along with a very talented crew.

Well now I’m not sure if my next choice actually qualifies but I’m going to take a chance on one of the greatest if not the greatest under achievers……………………….Bart Simpson. This character is just simply superb, funny, witty, cheeky and the pranks he gets up too just have to raise a smile. Once again though he does need a bit of help in achieving this status and is ably accompanied by his famous father Homer.

In my younger years I was easily influenced and some of my preferences in those younger days have , well they just stayed with me hence my next choice. Glynis Barber from that ever so corny Dempsey and Makepiece detective series of the 80’s. OK so maybe I wasn’t that young maybe just infatuated. Anyway corny though it was I watched week in and week out and enjoyed that few minutes company with MS Makepiece.

Purdie AKA Joanna Lumely is another female who caught my eye and still does. She was great in The Avengers and has gone on to bigger and better things, with still my weary eye watching. It is her voice that I am more attracted to, it’s so soft and sensual, mind you she was and still is pretty hot to look at too, at least in my eyes.

Another who may not actually qualify but did capture my imagination was Captain Scarlett AKA Captain Scarlett. This Gerry Anderson puppet series created the infamous Mr Indestructible who fought an endless battle with the Mysterons to save our planet from destruction. Where is he when we really need him.

And yet another female one who has graced our screens for many years and in many guises, but it is in one particular guise that she has stolen a lot of our hearts. She is of course Geraldine Grainger AKA Dawn French AKA The Vicar of Dibley. A comedy series based around the goings on in a small quaint English Village, who acquire their first female Vicar. Dawn French is simply one of the funniest female actress’s we have, she like Ronnie Barker sometimes has to do nothing to get the laughs , and as Geraldine Grainger she has had us laughing for years. In the series here there are many contributing actors/actress’s who add that bit of sparkle to the show but it is Dawn who always steals it.

At ten and with distinct possibilities of climbing higher whilst this is in the writing, I am placing a comedy character whom all will be familiar with. This being the one and only Del Boy Trotter, since the very first episode I’ve watched in awe as his slick and scheming character had us all in stitches, along with his brother Rodney. There are so many epic episodes of Only Fools and Horses, and singling one of these out as the best is a task in itself, but the one where he falls over at the bar is pure magic, and even in re-run and with the knowledge of what is coming next, it’s still extremely funny.

After great deliberation and the distinct possibility that Jean Luc was going to hold the coveted number one spot, I have come to the conclusion that since this covers TV from the year dot there can only really be one winner well several winners but only one character. Dr Who, the Doctor has graced our screens of and on for almost 50 years and his re-emergence in the form of Christopher Ecclesston and David Tennant has brought the Time Lord screaming into the naughties. For me personally David Tennant is the best Doctor but the margin can only be small since each Doctor had their own unique qualities and brought something special to the character. His battles with Daleks and Cybermen to name a few have had most of us on the edge of our seats over the years, and it is just great that he once again graces that little old box that’s sits in the corner and gives us all our own favourites to enjoys and debate.
Summary: Some good old friends
