Advantages: Characters that make me laugh mostly
Disadvantages: Too much T.V.?
It's actually kind of difficult to pick ten...and I don't watch that much T.V.! Here we are, in no order...
Lorelai Gilmore - Gilmore Girls
What a cool mum! She's smart, funny, trendy, good fun and very easy to talk to. Also she tends to be happy and chirpy and spreads that around wonderfully. I love the fast paced speeches and to be honest I can see myself in some of her huge over reactions, but on the whole, she's just very cheery and it cheers me up to be part of her sunny little town for an hour! I also love Luke from this show.
Gregory House - House, M.D.
A real grump! I love this character. In many ways, he comes across as having great integrity, he will tell the truth where many would lie... however, he also lies where many people would simply be truthful. He's clearly been hurt in the past but we can never seem to work out whether he has always been a grumpy, cynical old git or whether some great trauma has made him hate anyone who is happy. Everyone loves a tortured soul.
Desmond - LOST
I just think he's hilarious; he's so intense all the time! He is forever getting caught in the wrong place at the wrong time but is usually pretty heroic. He's happy to go his own way and to argue against the status quo. He's also happy to just fly under the radar. Hearing his accent on T.V always makes me laugh a little, even although it's not really like mine. John Locke was a close second here.
Bernard Black - Black Books
Another grumph I'm afraid. A grumpy, Irish, slightly soiled, alcoholic bookshop owner. You just know you're in for a laugh (and possibly a sing song) right there. I love Bernard, I want to have him round my house for a few wines, he makes completely scathing remarks about innocent bystanders and it makes me laugh! Manny is another favorite from Black Books.
Claudia - Party of Five
I loved Claudia when I was wee. I was around the same age as her when I watched this show so I instantly identified with her. She's one of the strongest characters. She's also the most honest. I always admire honesty in the face of consequences and she always seemed to own up and take her punishment, or speak up when everyone else was afraid to. I also loved that she played the violin. I played the trumpet and clarinet so I could identify with the child musician side of her too.
Dr Perry Cox - Scrubs
Yet another grumpy guy... weird... what does that say about me? Anyway, Cox is hard on the outside and soft on the inside (like armadillos) so it's ok. He takes off on huge stream of consciousness type rants which always end in insulting J.D. in some way. But underneath all the bravado he's a real softie with a heart of gold. I like that. He just beat Elliot from this show. I love her because she does daft things that I would probably do...
The Doctor - Star Trek Voyager
Don't mock me, my dad watched it! The Doctor is a brilliant character, he has a rubbish bedside manner and usually ends up insulting anyone within a ten foot radius. As the series progresses he becomes kinder, gentler and establishes relationships with other characters, but underneath, he's still very, very honest, almost brutally so, I always like that. He adds some humour to the show.
Rodger the Alien - American Dad
He's hilarious. So incredibly camp and fussy. His voice is brilliant and I love the way he walks, he slaps his feet, keeps his back straight and his little hands hang down in front. He's forever causing problems for the Smiths and complaining all the time, but he loves them really. He's just looking for approval!
Jeeves - Jeeves and Wooster
Stephen Fry actually IS Jeeves. It's incredible. Jeeves is the perfect antidote to Bertie's constant farcical shenanigans. He has engineered some of the most ingenious escape plans and engagement breakers of all time. He is forever cleaning up Bertie's mess and providing him with a plan. Just a wonderful character with an air of complete composure and stillness among absolute mayhem.
Piper - Charmed
Piper is the most motherly of the sisters in charmed. She is the sweetest and usually the balance in the relationship between the three sisters. I love Paige and Phoebe too, but Piper is my favourite. I can't really work out why, I like Paige's style better and Phoebe is so full of sunshine. But Piper is safe and kind and warm, so I suppose I just like her gentleness. I also like that she can freeze time and blow things up! I want that power!
Summary: Some of my favorites.
