Advantages: if our a couch potatoe the're great!

Disadvantages: If you'd rather get fit they're s**t!

Let me begin by saying that there isn’t much on television that really takes my inerest, not since I found Dooyoo anyway!!!!
Don’t get me wrong I love my soaps, just like everybody else, but they are SO easy to catch up on that it doesn’t really matter if I miss an episode or two!

I must admit though that even though Television isn’t quite my thing there are a few programmes that I’m glad I got the chance to see, the kind of T.V. that grabs the nation, even if only for a while!

So, in no particular order here they are my top TEN T.V. Programmes ever!

The first on my list is one that’s on T.V. at the moment, I’ve watched it since the first episode of the first series, which I think has a lot to do with the reason why its in my list. If you watch a programme from the beginning you get to know a bit about the characters and it makes it so much easier for you to continue watching. The series is ‘BAD GIRLS’ and is set in a women’s prison, the leading characters include ‘Chelle, Deni, Shaz, Yvonne, Crystal, Booky, Cassie, Roisin and the two Julie’s! Who are a mixture of different offenders ranging from kleptomaniacs to murderers. Then on the other supposedly ‘good’ side we have the prison officers Body bags, Fenner, Karen, and Diane. It is into its third series now, which is pretty good as far as ITV1 Dramas go! It has successfully managed to tackle real issues that women face in prison such as terminal illness, child-bearing behind bars, Substance abuse, rape, lesbianism, prostitution and no doubt there are more gripping storylines to come. I don’t want to give too much away, but if its realism you want then watch it, its on ITV1 on a Thursday night and starting at 9pm it lasts an hour.

The next programme on my list is there because I once loved it as equally as I now hate it (in case that doesn’t make sense-I thought it deserved a menti
on due to how much I did like it!). It was one of a kind in the eighties and I’m certain that every single one of you out there will have watched at least one episode of the matchmaking ‘BLIND DATE’. It was questions like ‘If you were a kitchen appliance, what would you be and why?’ that made me tune in, and then sexually suggestive answers like ‘I’d be a refrigerator because I’m cool on the inside but my motors always running!’ that kept me amused long enough to see it to the end. I preferred it when people would go to great lengths to get on the programme and they would dress up in wacky outfits and do stupid things in order to impress not just the date to be but the audience as well! These days it has lost its element of fun, but I’ve gotta admit it was a classic!

My next programme is, and I know I said I wasn’t going to mention any soaps, but ‘NEIGHBOURS’ back in the eighties was a bit of a cult. Everyone walking round imitating Charlene Ramseys (Kylie Minogue) spiral perm without any Hair products to achieve the frizz-effect. People video taping her marriage to Scott Robinson (Jason Donovan), and everyone taking pleasure in watching Mrs Mangel moan at every given opportunity. The nation was pumped full of soap on a daily basis for the first time as the show was aired five days a week, twice a day, which back then was a lot of air-time for a soap. You simply weren’t able to miss an episode, with it being on twice a day. It was a ritual to sit down in front of the telly with either your lunch or your dinner and get your fix of neighbours. Cult-Viewing in its finest form. For a while I think we over-dosed on it, because as the old saying goes ‘Too much of a good thing…’

I bet no-one remembers this next one on my list, and the only reason its on here is because I would have really have loved to have been on it! It was called ‘WHY DON’T
YOU?’, and it was basically a rip-off Blue-Peter, I say that because it was kids presenting it, and doing all sorts of travelling and adventuring, making things and learning how to cook. The kids that were on it seemed to me like just regular teenagers, and it was refreshing to see, and still is to think about, a programme that was solely in the hands of the kind of people that watched it!

Had to have this one in my top ten ‘LONDON’S BURNING’ and if I’m honest there’s only one real reason why its here, and that’s because I’ve got a thing for Firemen!!!!! (Especially little Billy.)

Oil, Cattle, Jewels, Money, Sex and quirky Texan accents made for great viewing in the eighties. ‘DALLAS’ was my personal favourite of the sparkly, over-emphasised shoulder-pad era. It had everything juicy in its scripts to keep us interested, love-triangles, vendettas, revenge-attacks, fancy parties and hunky guys, and the thing that I remember most about it was watching for months one day and then someone waking up to find that the last 6 months or so had been a dream!!!!! It had to be the best twist in the history of soapland.

‘The Big Breakfast’ was a bright and breezy morning for the nation at long last, no-more politics and news over my cereal thank goodness – I just cant tolerate it till I’ve had something more substantial to eat! It started in the late nineties and was initially hosted by Chris Evans, and since then a long line of mediocre famous people have stepped in and done cameo stints every now and then. It is basically fun and frolics at breakfast times, Daft quizzes, doing mad things, chatting to celebrities, novel ideas and wacky members of the public doing anything for a few measly quid! Unfortunately it has come to an end, I am unclear as to the reasons behind its departing from the channel, but these days I start work at 7am anyway so I’d miss it anyway
. If you never saw it then you’ve been deprived!

The next on my list is a comedy sketch show with a difference, it tends to draw on current affairs for humour and works a point scheme that really is non-existent – there are no prizes or incentives, it is basically just a group of comedians getting together, on the spur of the moment and working on impulse. ‘WHO’S LINE IS IT ANYWAY?’ – the reason I love this programme so much, is it highlights ‘real’ talent, people that can be presented with an object or an idea and use it to its full potential to make people laugh in a matter of seconds!!!!I especially like it when they make songs up about silly things!

Getting near the end of my list but I simply had to include ‘BIG BROTHER’, I missed the first series of the show, but thank goodness I didn’t miss the second! I was hooked from the start, and the Helen/Paul Saga drove me mad! The truth about this one is I am just generally a ‘nosy’ person, I can’t help it! It helped me become more aware of other people, honestly, I would sit and watch them in bed and think – That could be me, asleep, right now! Silly me, I was too busy waiting for one of them to fart or something instead of getting to sleep myself! I missed it during the day because of that! I just loved the whole study of them, although at some points they reminded me of chimps being experimented with. Makes a change though! Great viewing and don’t judge it before you’ve watched it!

Last on my list is a fascinating programme full of colourful imagery, and simplistic designs, it’s a really good programme to watch when you’ve had too much to drink. The songs are chirpy and simple and it has to be one of life’s greatest pick-me ups. It is consistent in its content, and never strays too far away from its main idea, which is to get your attention and keep you watching! THE TE
LETUBBIES! What a masterpiece!
