Advantages: Still a safer way of travelling
Disadvantages: not safe enough
I dont. We are brought up in a society that takes safety and travel for granted. A lot of us commute backwards and forwards to work everyday on a train. Whether its into Central London or other major lines, we all do it from time to time. We rely on signals to warn us of oncoming trains, stopped trains etc, so we are putting our lives in the hands of technology. If we look back to the recent crashes, we can see what happened. Signal 109 is being blamed for the Paddington disaster. Yet they freely admit it was on red yet the driver went through it. Surely we cannot blame the signal this time? It was the driver jumping the lights. Maybe he was under pressure from his bosses to get passengers to their destination on time. They paid with their lives. The new automatic system being introduced over the next few years is supposed to stop disasters like this. Will it though? Surely, the same trains will be delayed and an override function will be fitted to these trains so the driver can intervene. The problem is therefore not solved. We need a better public transport network with an inproved train infastructure. More government money needs investing to make it altogether safer.

- 07/10/00 You cannot say he jumped the light - as the train was accelerating when he went through the light. The reason why the driver did has never been proven !! |
