Safer than many other forms of transport

After the tragic events over the past few years, including crashes at Paddington and Hatfield, people have started to question the safety of Britain's trains.
Obviously it is totally unacceptable that any lives are lost on our railways, but this has to be put in context. Thousands of train journeys occur everyday but it only seems that there is about one major crash each year. This is therefore not 100% safe but compare it to other forms of transport. Cars are the obvious example - the number of cars which crash is far, far higher than trains. Planes crash regularly and 'unsinkable' boats have sunk.
The work currently being undertaken by Railtrack will surely ensure that the railways will see less tragedies in the future.
