Advantages: The fuel prices are forcing people to use greener methods of transport
Disadvantages: It is hurting people who have to rely on their cars such as the disabled
I do not drive, I will say that to start with but that does not mean that I do not appreciate the problems that are being caused by the fuel prices at the moment. Someone told me that if we paid the same tax on a pint of milk as we do on petrol milk would be around £2.50 a pint! However, I can see why the government put so much tax on fuel it is for the same reason as the taxes on smoking; they want to discourage people from using it. We are all up in arms about the state of the environment (and its not a fantasy) we have about thirty years of oil supplies left and global warming is causing the ice caps to melt. This will cause our entire global climate to change and our sea levels to rise. Yet none of us seem willing to do anything about it. We must chose either we carry on using the amount of fuel we are preferably at a lower price or we do something about the environment i.e. walk short journeys and use the bus, tube, train or cycle to work which in the long run would cut our fuel bills for us. I can already hear you screaming “but there is no bus service in my village” “the trains are too unreliable” etc etc. In the majority of cases there is no excuse, I have no car and I manage with a baby fine thank you very much. My sister this week had to travel to work by bicycle this week because of the fuel shortage and she has decided that the three-mile bike ride saves her so much money that she will continue to do it after the shortage has ended.

- 17/09/00 I totallly agree with you merlina my mother is also disabled and she does rely on a car for longer journeys. I did say in the majority of cases there is no excuse, but I do accept that some people find it difficult to use public transport and in some places there is a bus once a day. My mum uses one of those electric buggies for short journeys, I think they can go for 10 miles on one charge, and they are available through the motorbility scheme see your local DSS for details. |

- 15/09/00 My mother is 80 and lives in a village with no bus service. Should she walk the 25 miles to the nearest shop? My gripe with your opinion is that you do not evidence the allegation/contention that there is 'no excuse'. Sometimes that is certainly the case. But until there is a viable public transport network, there is absolutely no choice for nightworkers, those in rural areas and many many others |

- 15/09/00 I agree with you completely. Also, though public transport is abysmal in many places, there is hoe that the service improves if there is more demand for it. |
