Advantages: It will run out eventually
Disadvantages: Not enough is being done NOW
Let me tell you a little story, about 3million years the dinosaurs died. Lucky buggers, cos they never had to put up with Petrol at £1 a litre. Last time I looked, fuel was not free, and I'm not even going to suggest making it free. What I am going to suggest is the following...
1. Tell the American's to pay their fair share.
2. Urban and Rural petrol pricing.
and
3.More emphasis on alternative fuel research.
----- Not some more Yankie Bashing -----
I hate having a car. If it were up to me I would rather walk, cycle or get the Mrs to push me around in a trolley. However (and this will be covered in number 2) I live in an area where a car is practically a necessity. I say practically, because there are alternatives to paying a fortune for filling the car up with "Gordon Brown's Gold". The main way of saving money on the UK petrol price would be to distribute the cost around the world. Why are we paying a fortune when the Americans admit themselves through their President, that they are "Addicted to Oil". I am addicted to cigarettes and have to pay accordingly, so why aint the Yanks doing the same? Ok they may drill for it in Texas, but I am sure that we have some squashed dead Dinosaurs in the North Sea. Didn't we start drilling in the North Sea in the 1970's ? Where has all that oil gone? More to the point, why are the Americans so dependent on the car ? If you have ever had the experience of going to the USA, one of the first things you notice is the lack of pavements. THEY DRIVE EVERYWHERE ! So if Old Geordie Dubya hiked up the price of GAS in the States he could kill three birds with one stone. 1. It would subsidise the price of OUR petrol. 2. It would encourage those obese americans to walk a bit more, and 3. It would help to prepare them for the eventual lack of oil in the US when they stop fighting wars because of it.
So there you go. Tax the oil and gas going OUT of the UK Gordon Brown, and you can reduce our prices.
Now to my number two...
----- Get orfff my pump -----
Some of you may not be aware of Red Diesel. This is a legal form of diesel specifically produced for agricultural vehicles, like tractors, combine harvestors and high powered Subarus owned by young farmers. However the mere fact that this fuel exists is proof that there is already a secret form of rural and urban fuel pricing. I know there are already traffic pricing plans in place to curb traffic congestion....(a hanky for your exhaust and a lemsip for your washerbottle), like the schemes in London etc where you have to pay to go into a city. BUT, and here is a crazy thought, what if you did the same with fuel? By that, I mean have petrol stations on motorways charge MORE than those on "A" roads. I know that rip off garages do a bit of there own cashing in on the Townies, but there are a lot of people who could Car Share (Like I do), cycle or walk.
There are many places in the UK like Inverness. The place where I stay has a terrible bus network, lousy rail links and taxi's cost a small fortune. There are no busses or trains that run at 5am when I go to work, and a limited service at 7pm when I am going home. So for my part I Car Share. So why not give car sharers and those in rural areas a discount on the price they pay per litre ? Areas that can easily be proven to have less than x amount of busses or trains per day should have a zonal discount. I am sure there is more to it, but it's a start for you to think about.
Finally, one that REALLY caught my interest....
----- 1.8 16valve and it runs on Buckfast -----
I heard a recent report on the news about a car that was capable of running on linseed oil. Wow, what a though, amazing, it was a RALLY CAR! WHy the heck are we not filling the fields with linseed ? I will tell you why, because there is too big an industry in OIL. Honestly, do you believe that we cannot find a better fuel to run cars on than Barney and his mates ? I have heard of Hydrogen cars, hybred cars using both petrol and electric...... but where are they? WHy is there not more research being done on developing cars that run on something other than petrol? There must be a way of converting cars to run off of Wine. Let's take the wine lake in France and put it in tankers....armed tankers... and then fill up the cars with it. Again, just a though, but there must be something in it. There could be a conspiracy that involves the petrol producers and car manufacturers.
Again I must apologise for my ranting, and for the fact there are more questions than answers in this rant. However I hope it gives you FUEL for thought.
Thanks for reading.
Summary: Tax the exported oil, share the car and pour Buckfast in the tank.

aoife74 - 26.09.06 Good review - & most definitely there are valid alternatives already but the petrol business is worth too much to our greedy governments. |
