Are we being ripped off? Well of course we are and we all know it. The governments Policy is if it moves tax it and if it doesnt move tax it. AND if we can convince you its bad for you we can treble or quadruple the tax on it.

Lets please face the Obvious, cars and planes are here to stay. We don't all want to go on a walking holiday in the hills or to cycle in the rain to work. The car has liberated our lives and cheaper flights have enabled us to see parts of the world never dreamed of by our Grandparents.

Of course we all know that the use of fossil fuels is creating global warming and we all feel guilty every time we switch the light on but will our feeble efforts to cut down on the use of fuel really achieve any thing when china and India alone are increasing their use of power more each day than we could save in a year, apart from the other developing nations. Are we going to tell them to stop developing because of Global warming, somehow I don't think they would listen.

So, back to the tax. The reason we are being ripped off is the fact that the tax is not being spent on research to resolve the situation. If the government were spending our money to research into different types of fuel and propulsion so that all countries including the developing ones could have the power they need without ruining the planet I would not object to the tax at all in fact I would happily pay more. Alas this is not the case they tax us (for our own good) and spend it willy nilly on cock eyed hair brained schemes that do nothing for the environment and nothing for our industries

Yes we are being ripped off

Summary: Use the tax to solve the problem

To SticMan
You can tax our cars off of the road as much as you like it wil not make a bit of difference to global warming. At the rate that China and India along with other countries are developing the Carbon emmissions are riseing daily by more than we could save in a year. Are you going to deny these countries the right to develop. The only answer is to put as much money into research as possible and find a polution free fuel and source of energy

We have the highes tax rates in Europe on fuel, some people will argue that it wrong and maybe it is. However if one observes the congestion on the roads and it's impact on global warming then you can see that motorists need some sort of deterent. Since this is price based it will inevitably effect the poorest the most.
