Advantages: Cheaper Petrol

Disadvantages: Cut back on Government spending

The cost of petrol is not the only bone of contention its also the tax which we have to pay on the money, with which we pay for petrol, I worked it out that, my little Peugeot, which I've had for about 8 years, the first time I filled it up cost me £27, last week it cost me over £44.00 which I have had to pay tax on @ 20 pence in the pound on my wages (as from the last Budget) which equals £44.00+ £8.88 = £52 .80. We then pay tax to the government on the £44 (part of which has already been taxed) according to northern Alex who is a member of Dooyoo, 2/3rds of the £44 is tax therefore that is £29.33 (tax on petrol+ tax paid on the £44) £8.80 which comes to £38.13 this is what the government takes off every driver spending £44 on petrol and I feel this is unacceptable. This is the same for all fuels Gas, Electric, as you know these prices have rocketed, the government have not done anything to stop this, they are quite happy to take the 5% tax on the millions of pounds we spend keeping ourselves warm. These are a few of the things (including beer and cigarettes) that gets hammered every budget day with extra tax then they sit back, then every time the item increases in price the tax automatically increases again.
As I have had a number of comments I would like to add this-:
This article is placed under speakers corner>Discussion not an actual review
My main point is how the cost of petrol has gone up over the last few years due to tax, as you correctly say, it is one sided as I cannot make a comment on how it affects other people but there must be a lot of people like me, in my situation.
I do not see manufactures of petroleum products suffering; indeed the profits get bigger by the day. (The Government likes this, it means even more tax for the Chancellor)
The Government allows all energy companies to charge us extra to find ways to make cuts in the use of fuel and reduce the usage including Gas and Electricity.
At the moment petrol prices hits every one the same, for example if the road tax was put into petrol at the forecourt of petrol stations, then no one can evade paying road tax (How many times do we hear of the thousands of untaxed cars on the road). 4*4 and other guzzlers would automatically pay a lot more.

My car is a 20-year-old Peugeot 1.1 and I drive approximately 4000 miles a year, pay the same for petrol per litre as some one who has a gas-guzzler, yes they do pay more only because the engine is bigger and quite often as not, a company car, drives 20,000 or more miles per year.
My main gripe is not with the petrol companies but the tax we all pay to the government. If I thought that the Government was using the money to improve the environment then this would not be so bad, as with the road tax, which was first brought in to improve the roads, now only a small percentage is actually spent on them.

Summary: Fuel must be one of the highest taxed products in the world

you are right - Tax is very high on fuel as its "easy money" for the government as part of collecting overall taxes - as people love their cars so they put up with it - pluis public transport is awful!
By the way - Manufacturers can and do make low emission vehicles....but many customers just dont like them - it's always a great "idea" to drive small cars but when it comes to the deal - a lot of people are still opting for higher powered vehicles that use more fuel because they are more luxurious or powerful.
