Disadvantages: The protestors disadvantaged more people
Well, the one thing that I totally didn't understand about the whole petrol "demonstration" thing was; Why on earth did the tanker people drive REALLY slowly up the motorways, wasting more fuel (more importantly) MONEY by doing this as the money that they'd have spent on replensishing their fuel would have probably gieven the government a whole load MORE tax money anyway! Does this just not completely contradict what they were moaning about in the first place? Anyway, I found the whole demonstration thing completely ridiculous. Ok, if you want to demonstrate because thats what you believe in, then Yes, by all means do it. But, don't try forcing your views onto other people by doing the blockades etc. The demonstrators were stopping people that totally disagreed with them, i.e. Me, from using their right to make their own decisions and choices. Even though I care a little about the amount of tax, I am still happy to part with my money for it, and they stopped me from doing that! I am happy to pay tax on things, as I would not like to have to pay for everything myself, as in other countries. I really don't understand why these people were so adamant on people listening and agreeing with them, when they weren't willing to listen to other people, who didn't agree with them. Also, I don't see why one day they said "Oh okay, we'll let tankers out so that doctors and nurses can do their work". I'm sorry but they still have to pay the same amount of tax don't they? if you feel so strongly about something, that you are willing to bring Britain to a standstill then Stick to your guns mateys! Why did they do that? Well, they "didn't want to look bad as they knew the emergency services need fuel" So do the people that don't agree with your argument.

- 17/12/00 ok, yes i agree protesting is the only way to make people listen and it certainly did that!! the only thing is, it isn't the only way to make people hear you. you don't see thousands of students not letting tony blair and family out of his house until he lets us have more money!!!!
But i appreciate what you guys are saying ;) |

- 11/12/00 I also do not agree, because to get the intention of the government means you have to do something special. They did something special, but they were not able to change something. I thing the problem is that people fear to stand up for their rights and to protest. It is very hard in our days to change the systems after the election is done and if the government has done something you do not like demonstration is nearly the onliest way to change something and that is why I do not agree.
Anyway :-) |

- 09/12/00 Sorry but I can't agree with you on this one, when government don't listen to the people there are very few ways to get your point across.
protests are the only option, I thought our truckers went about it in the most professional manner possible. |
