Advantages: the chancellor can rub his hands together in glee.
Disadvantages: The country is being ripped off.
At every oppurtunity the government has inreased fuel tax by at least 5p a litre. In the past , 5p a gallon was considered a massive price hike. When the brits used to drive on the continent we thought there prices were dear, now, if you live near Dover it pays to pop to France to fill up. I have to use lead free four star as I drive a non convertible car, but why is lead free 4 star dearer, as there is now no lead in it. The fuel tax surely is not spent on providing better roads, why should high milage drivers be subsidising non drivers. Many people I no have bought diesel fueled cars or are planning to, as the fuel is cheeper. However, Diesal is meant to be worse than any other fuel for the environment. In many parts of the country there is no sensible option to driving. Public transport is also very dear. In my expierance on some journeys travelling alone I would break even, but if travelling with just one person it is still miles cheeper to go by car. This isnt because petrol is good value, this is because public transport is not a cost effective option.

- 02/07/00 I agree with every word. A tank of petrol 'costing' £50.00 consists of £43.00 in tax! I'm too angry to comment any further. |
