UK Roads ... and bypasses? Should we be charged for using roads and bridges?

Newest Review: ... often seems that very little of it does. In other countries like Ireland the roads seem to be in better condition and the tax is lower so why can't our roads be the same! In the past year I've had to have both my track rod ends replaced and my offside CV joint and driveshaft (which was buckled and led to the CV breaking and all the bearings flying out). I've had three punctures ... more

Premium Review UK Roads: This Is The Road To Hell (365 words)

I like to get out in my car for a drive round when I have some spare time. I pay road tax and a very large amount of tax on the petrol that I buy and also parts and labour for servicing are taxed as well as a giant new car tax when the car is first sold so having a car costs a very lot in tax. The least to expect is that some of that tax money would find its way back into improving the roads but it often seems that very little of it does. In other countries like Ireland the roads seem to be in better condition and the tax is lower so why can't our roads be the same! ...By 'them' I mean everyone responsible for the current appalling state of the roads throughout this country, and particularly in London, where I live, where it's currently taking me two and a half hours to get into work when it should take one and a quarter. My journey to work consists of a two mile bus jouney followed by a twenty minute train journey. The train journey is fine, even occasionally enjoyable, as it's one of the less congested routes and I rarely find myself without a seat. The bus journey, number 36 from Camberwell to Vauxhall, has degenerated over the past few months into an absolute nightmare. First, there were ...  Read the complete review

A couple of motoring stories in the press caught my attention last week.... The first was the latest proposal to solve congestion. It basically involves fitting electronic tags to all cars. These would transmit to roadside terminals on most A-roads and motorways so that usage of these roads during peak hours could be monitored, the information stored on a central computer and a bill sent to you (congestion charging) on a monthly basis. A few concerns:- 1. Do I want the government to know my exact location whenever I am in the car? 2. What is to stop them collecting information outside of peak hours? 3. What happens when the criminal ...  Read the complete review

Roads. What a nightmare! Congestion, pollution, accidents, the list is endless. But maybe a solution is at hand. Perusing through my favourite sites this morning, as I do normally every day, I found a rather interesting article with regards to some new plans the Government has in store for the good old general public. At this point I would like to stress to any of you who drive/own a car PLEASE READ ON!!! For many years the UK has had a serious problem with the amount of congestion on our highways. Any of you living in, for example, London, or any major city will certainly agree with this. Traffic has increased, due to many factors. ...  Read the complete review

One Saturday, while particularly bored, I decided to walk along the road to where the Council were at last repairing a large hole in the main road, which had thriven healthily on the pounding it received from heavy traffic for many months. At the spot in question, I found that the idea had not occurred to me alone - there were eight or nine people, including the brave few who do the County a great service by supporting (at the corners) the public buildings of our village. The object of their admiration was a magnificent lorry, resplendent in the livery of the Council and flaunting its device on both doors. In the back of this colourful vehicle was the inevitable ...  Read the complete review
