Advantages: Reduces Pollution
Disadvantages: Higher fee for older cars, Discrimination on same models, unfair
Vehicle Excise Duty – otherwise know as the Road Tax How many of you out there are pissed off with the new Car Tax system. Right I brought my car in February 15 2000 and it was a (Rover 25 1.4 is). Now the reason why I brought the car is because it was my 25th birthday and I felt that 25 year where going to be lucky for me. Hence the car is a Rover 25 and I really did like it so I brought it. Brilliant! Now the Bit I got stuck on is that this year I received my Road tax Renewal and it stated that there are going to be some new system to charge people for road tax. This new system that is the more that you pollute the more you’re going to have to pay. The way the system works is that your car is measure on the amount of CO2 emissions you pollute. Now what CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) is when petrol or diesel is burnt for energy in a car engine, the main by products (emissions) are water vapour and CO2, which are directly set to the amount of fuel burned. Carbon Dioxide is one of the major greenhouse gases that contribute to climate pollution. Don’t take me wrong in anyway when you’re reading this but I am up for reducing pollution but I’m not going to support discrimination. There is a big discrimination against people who brought their cars before 1st March 2001. It means that you will need to pay the full amount for 160 pounds for a whole year road tax regardless of what car you have. If I had brought my Rover 25 after that period then I would have at least saved 40 pounds. Here is the pricing system for the new band categories DIESEL CARS -------------------- CO2 Emission Figure 6 months 12 months Band A Up to 150 110.00 60.50 Band B 151 - 165 130.00 71.50 Band C 166 - 185 150.00 71.50 Band D Over 185 160.00 88.00 PETROL CARS --------------------- CO2 Emission Figu

In easier terms a different kind of fuel, which reduces pollution as well as making it cheaper to run. Now on this site there a link to an area to show you how much you would be saving from the changes. The address to that calculation is below. http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk//ved_calculat or.asp Now who is with me when I say the word discrimination, the car that I brought about a year yearly would of have cheaper tax if I had waited. And her another funny fact that the CO2 emission do not effect your MOT in anyway. It’s the carbon monoxide that is measured during the emission test. So if it down to the manufacturers then why can’t they arrange a test on the earlier cars to check that there up to standards. At least this way they can also help the environment out as well as us consumers. We meant to spend so much tax on everything else to repair the road and help out in reducing pollution so why is it that you’re discriminated for the age of your car. So they want to put a tolling fee in the inner city roads that fine by me but your going to have to make my road tax much cheaper as well. You can’t expect us
lot to pay for everything for god sakes how many driver are out there. What do you all think! I am really angry with this and hope that someone who reads this can point me in the right direction to complain about this. :0( Not Happy! Sorry about the moan!

- 20/05/06 Heh, my comments below were based on the Chancellors latest budget for 2006 with the included revisions in the road tax system. Sorry, I didn't see how old this post was, but the points I make are still relevant and should outrage many UK drivers. Another point I forgot to make is that the new road tax system unfairly penalizes families who need bigger cars with bigger engines. It is unreasonable for Mr. Brown to expect a family of 4 or 5 to cram everyone and their gear into a 1.0 liter car. |

- 20/05/06 The problem with this taxation system is that it does not take into account the amount that a car is actually driven, and how well it is maintained. It also allows people with very old cars (built before Jan 1, 1973) to operate vehicles that put out much higher levels of pollutants than newer cars, to operate them tax free. Why should they pay nothing? They cause wear and tear on the roads as much as a newer vehicle and emit more pollutants, besides. As for the mileage issue, if I drive my car very little, say, 5,000 miles per year and keep up the maintenance on it, I will emit less pollutants over time than someone who drives the same car 30,000 miles per year and never does a tune up or checks his tire inflation pressure. Why should I fall in the same tax band when I don't cause as much environmental damage as the other guy? A fairer system would be to add say, 10p to the price of a liter of petrol or diesel fuel. That way those who use the most fuel by driving inefficient cars, drive high miles, or exercise poor maintenance practices, will be the most penalized, while those who use less fuel and cause less pollution are rewarded. You could lessen the tax on cleaner fuels like lpg to 5p per liter to encourage more people to convert their old petrol cars or buy alternate fuel cars from new car dealers. Gordon Brown thinks he has pulled off a coup by including the Band A road tax exemption. It sounds good until you find out that only two cars manufactured in the entire world fall into Band A, and neither of them is available in the UK, so yes, you will be paying some form of road tax this year, even if you own a Prius, which emits 104g/km of CO2, the least polluting car in the UK, which is just short of putting it into Band A. |
