Advantages: Romance
Disadvantages: Why one day?
Valentine's Day is fast approaching every shop you look at is decorated in red with love items scattered all around. So commercially time to be conned into purchasing a box of chocolates a bunch of flowers at vastly inflated prices.
So is it just commercialised rubbish as my Husband is heard to say in the lead up or is it a wonderful time to show someone that you love them. Valentine's Day has been celebrated since the middle ages but only since the Middle of the 19th Century has homemade love notes given way to commercial cards.
I personally am romantic and love the idea of receiving Roses for me its Pink ones as that is the colour of the rose he presented to me on proposing (see romantic) yet isn't it more romantic and thoughtful to receive a gift from your loved one just because rather than because you are told to?
Ok for most of us leading busy lives that are easier said than done and it's far easy to stick a card in the trolley with a bouquet as we rush around the supermarket than to think of a romantic gesture for ourselves.
I am not saying no to valentines just maybe have your own valentines another day for me the best romantic gestures are those that are really personal for example on the birth of our children my husband bought not flowers but Brie to the hospital far better he knows that I miss this most in the 9 months of pregnancy and you cannot eat flowers! On a Day when the Children are sick and we have been up all night on returning from work he brings a bunch of Daffodils as he knows these are my favourites.
Valentine's Day is great for stopping and being romantic on that one day but what about the rest of the year?
Why stop at one day we are all guilty of taking our nearest and dearest for granted not spending enough time with your partner or at least not quality time for myself before we had children we had date night -one night a week where we made time for each other .
This does seem to have gone by the wayside in recent years and we have fallen into the trap of being Mummy and Daddy always and not being a Couple so this year we are addressing that and it's not just one day of romance but little thoughtful things all the time.
So will I be disappointed not to receive a large Bouquet of roses and a romantic meal in a restaurant absolutely not in fact I would be more annoyed if he spends a fortune. Particularly in light of the Credit Crunch so let's be savvy this year and really treat our loved ones to something different and meaningful .
My top ten credit crunch busting romantic
1) Indoor picnic with all your favourite nibbles
2) Mixed cd of favourite songs (so 80's and corny but it lasts and lasts )
3) A Cheque book of favours (can be thoughtful such as running a bath or as wild as you wish!)
4) A long romantic walk followed by a pub lunch
5) Turn off your mobiles take the phone of the hook and watch a film and .........
6) Pick a place and go on a date
7) Breakfast in bed followed by a lovely bubble bath total bliss
8) Do a job your partner hates ( I love him when the ironing been done)
9) A loving massage
10) Cook your favourite Dinner no swanky restaurant can beat it and open a bottle of wine
So before you rush out and buy the commercial present that someone else has dictated that you should, just have a little think about it.
Maybe go and make your partner a card and do something really special to you both and if you really want to buy the chocolates Thornton's do heart shaped chocolates you can buy one or as many as you wish.
I am hoping if My Husband does decide to show romance on Valentine's Day that he goes with a pack of Chocolate Buttons and some daffodils and it would be really nice to have a bubble bath without any toys and children! For him I will be giving him a time out voucher to watch the rugby with his friends and no moaning from the wife!
Book a three course meal in a restaurant in the middle of April or June, buy flowers just because its raining and have fun thinking of things you can do that are free or cheap and are personal for you if you are stuck look at www. theromantic.com or lovingyou.com.
Thank you for reading hopes you have lots of romance with your partner.
Summary: One day of romane or more
