Valentines day, you love it if your in a couple and your gutted by it if your single. Personally for me it is time that me and my partner can make for each other, when then rest of the time we are swamped with the chaos that comes with having children. We don't get much time to spoil each other and be affectionate to one another. Valentines day is a good reminder to make the time. The presents and cards aren't important although it is nice to be treated now and then. The most important thing is doing something together you both enjoy.
You can spoil each other in many ways without it costing a fortune, a nice meal, a bath together. Picking some flowers (not rare or nicked from someone's garden hehehe). A nice walk out together. There are loads of things. Your partner just wants to know you care and think about them.

Don't let the commercialism of it put you off. You can ignore all that and make it extra special.

Summary: Enjoy it for what it is without all the nonense
