Advantages: Weight loss, Money saving, Fabulous food
Disadvantages: Have to be careful to get the right nutritional balance
I'm one of those kind-of veggies - the annoying sort that still eats fish but can't quite justify it! A Feggie? Sounds alright. My reasons were two-fold. I never really 'loved' meat and found it a bit gross to prepare when cooking. But my other reason was pure laziness - my boyfriend is veggie and loves to cook. I don't like it as much so I let him cook for me. After eating really good veggie food for a while - your stomach actually rejects meat when you do eat it. So that was the decision made for me! My boyfriend eats fish because he believes they can't feel pain - and worries about nutrition without it. The jury is still out on that one. Since becoming Veggie I have found that I eat the most amazing stuff that I would never have dreamed of eating before. I used to think. 'Hmmm, what shall I have for dinner? Chicken, pork or beef?' Then it would be: 'Shall I serve it with rice, pasta or potatoes?' And finally: 'Peas or beans?' Now, it's more like: Mushroom Stroganoff with white wine and mustard? Grilled peppers, aubergines and cherry tomatoes, wrapped in a flour tortilla and served with sesame seeds, avocado and yoghurt? Tobasco optional. Onion and chick pea curry, with tons of Quorn, marinaded in curry and sun-dried tomato paste. Sprinkled in toasted sunflower and poppy seeds and served with sour cream? Quorn is the best meat substitute there has ever been - the range copies the flavours of meat so well that the lamb one makes me retch just like the real thing! The mince is so like beef, you can only tell the difference by the lack of gristle. Did I mention the amazing bolognaise sauce the other half makes with rich red wine and plum tomatoes? The chicken one is so easy to prepare and soaks up the flavours of the sauce brilliantly. Aga
in no surprises in the gristle/stray veins department. Quorn and vegetables are extremely low in fat and try as I might I cannot put on weight with the diet I eat these days - and believe me, friends baulk at the amount I can pack down in a single sitting! I tend to choose the menu according to what is on offer at the supermarket - and when Quorn is on a two-for-one I'm positively dangerous! So I have found that I can eat incredibly cheaply now I don't rely on meat in every dish. I have also not had food poisoning since converting. So, no I have no mallace against meat eaters - I just think you're missing out on some amazing experimental cooking.

- 21/09/01 I don't miss out on ANY experimental cooking instead of "Mushroom Stroganoff with white wine and mustard" - I have chicken in white wine sauce (with mushrooms, mustard....)served with rice, garlic bread and vegetables. Good op though. |

- 20/09/01 We no longer eat together. Should current (also veggie) or future other halves serve it up, I'll give it another try but for now, all I have are bland memories :-) |

- 19/09/01 I can't believe you think fish can't feel pain....and i hope you are managing to get those few essential amino acids that are only found in meat... Sure you have an interesting diet, but i'm also sure your way of slating meat dishes is prejudiced, go to any restaraunt that uses meat and see the ridiculous array of dishes and styles available... |
