Advantages: Gives Choice

Disadvantages: Makes people Ill, Why try to force other peole (including your children) not to eat meat?

YOU'RE A WHAT????????????

I'm sure when children go to their parents and tell them they think eating animals is wrong this is the reception they get.

Well so they should. Those of us who have decided to not eat animals are not vegetarians.

Bold as the statement is, it is also very true. to be a vegetarian we would have to be able to eat every vegetable, yes including grass. Now I know a load of you are going to shout stop but listen to my reasoning.

A cow is a vegetarian... it has teeth that are good only for eating grass and breaking down the thick cell walls. It also has three stomachs to help get the most out of the grass.
A shark is most definately a carnivore it has teeth that are only good for ripping and tearing flesh. I also has a quick digestive system and good fat storage to get the most out of the meat it eats and to store it for later use.
Humans are indeed omnivores, we have ripping teeth, piercing teeth and crushing teeth. We have a diverse digestive system to get the most out of what ever we eat.

This clearly proves that eating animals is not wrong. We have certainly been doing it since the dark ages so why is it so wrong now? Or shall we cut out all meat and slaughter all the carnivores on the planet? if it's that wrong then why not.

It is only morals that can even deny the feasting. If your morals say that to eat a fish is wrong ask it why? If it says it was a living creature just say "Yes, but so am I if I don't eat it I can die!". This is called nature... we are bigger than the fish so we eat the fish. We are cleverer than the cow so we eat the cow. Survival of the fittest.

Now I completely agree with the arguement about new farming methods being cruel and in the logical way have moved to organicly raised meat. Not going loopy (as it seems) and denying myself any meat whatsoever. What would I do if I didn't have my Bacon???? mmmm :}

What?
?? I can hear nit pickers picking on the former paragraph, "Why don't we just eat everything on the planet then?" That'd be pretty silly wouldn't it? We'd starve.. in come the farmers (hopefully organic) to resupply us.

Now if you think that this is using 'gods Earth' for our own pleasures. Well??? Read the bible, does it not say that God in his infinite wisdom that we should work the land to feed ourselves for sinning in Eden? And did it not also say that mastery over the animals is ours?

If you are a little more scientific you wouldn't be a vegetarian to start off with you either, would choose not to eat meat, or have the stance of 'preserving nature'. I agree this is a fine cause, but you have a snowball in hell's chance of affeting anything by stopping eating meat... They're still going to chop down the rainforest and spoil natural diversity (Buggers).

So in effect all we can say is that those of us who do not wish to eat meat for whatever reason are not vegetarian but are omnivores who don't want meat.

I don't like, or eat, a lot of vegetables but that doesn't make me a carnivore, Does it?

hmmm gonna do some cut n paste now form another comments thread..apologies for that.
My argument against eating meat would be the one about the impact that eating meat has on the wider environment. Cows, pigs and sheep are higher up the food chain than plants. Because animal use most of the energy they receive from eating plants for metabolising and not for building useful meat they are necessarily less efficient as a food for people than plants. Using meat as a food means that at least 10 times as much land is required, as much as 50 times as much energy input is required and up to 100 times as much water input is required compared to growing edible plants of similar nutritional value. It's just a needless waste of resources.

The current agricultural regime where over half the grain produced in agricultural economies is fed to livestock is environmentally unsustainable, inflates grain prices causing poverty-related hunger in the majority world and creates landscapes of unsurpassed bilogical monotony. We need more forests and wild places. Not more fields of corn to feed cattle or scrubbed up meadow/ranch encroaching ever more on what's left of the biological richness of the natiural world.

Re the our bodies are designed for it thing: just beacuse our bodies are capable of something does that mean we should do it. My body is quite well designed for violence against other people. My brain is capable of thinking up torture methods. I choose not to do either of those things.
No matter what we have come from we have choices now.
On a more foody angle- I choose not to indulge in cannibalism for example. A moral choice ;o) I also choose not to eat meat or fish. Hope that's not been too preachy :oD
Oh and Muslims definitely aren't vegans. Some Jainists would be though- they tend to be very very very peaceful.

I did read it. And if you know the argument sucks, why use it? I know this is an opinion site, which is why I am allowed to disagree with you and say why, rather than say "yes great opinion you are so wonderful".
