Advantages: many medicines come out of animal research

Disadvantages: too many pointless experiments are going on

Looking at the current opinions in this section, I know that I'm about to give a controversial opinion on vivisection. But, as a scientist, I feel I should speak up.

First of all, I would like to say that I am against POINTLESS vivisection, such as military weapon research and cosmetic testing. I feel this needlessly harms animals, which is wrong.

Medical research, on the other hand, is necessary. The countless drugs that were developed and refined by animal testing are too numberous to list, but I will mention that diabetes treatment, leukemia treatment, AIDS drugs, the polio vaccine, and the global elimination of smallpox are down to animal research. Even veterinary drugs, which are used to save the lives of millions of pets each year, are only around because of animal research.

The two alternatives to animal research are human research, which most people would admit is a far worse option, or not developing curing drugs at all. Could you look into the eyes of two people and tell them their child and many like him or her should die because the lives of some rats or dogs are worth more?
