Was 9/11 An Inside Job?

Advantages: The evidence is compelling

Disadvantages: There are just as many counter theories.

When the twin towers of New York's World Trade Centre collapsed on September 11th 2001, it was a turning point in the world's history. A cosy Western society was rocked to the core; its beliefs that this was an age of relative peace and prosperity brought to a halt as the world watched Armageddon unfold in front of it. It's worth bearing in mind that, whatever happened that day, nearly 3, 000 people lost their lives, the level of human tragedy clearly enormous and unavoidable.

When I watched the Twin Towers fall, I suppose I was taken with the dread of the situation as much as anyone else. I knew that a third building (tower 7) had also collapsed; I knew also that a plane had crashed into the Pentagon. Subsequently, it arose that a fourth plane had crashed, purportedly as a result of intervention from heroic passengers who prevented it from crashing into the White House. I never really questioned any of this any more than to say (almost flippantly) that the Twin Towers looked as though they had been purposefully demolished.

Six years later, like a growing percentage of the World's population, I now firmly believe that that is exactly what did happen.

For anyone looking for a rapid (if not overwhelming) digest of the facts supporting this theory, look no further than www.youtube.com, search on 9/11 coincidences and watch the eleven short films under that banner (preferably in numerical order.) If, at the end of that exercise, you are not aghast at what you have seen, I'd be rather surprised.

The events surrounding 9/11 are a conspiracy of coincidence, in many cases to an extent that would stretch even the most imaginative author's talents. Did you know, for example, that on the morning of 9/11, the US military was undertaking a series of "exercises" intended to simulate what the response would be to a terrorist attack on major US landmarks? Was it just a coincidence – or was it a convenient excuse to blur the lines between reality and simulation and to throw the country's defence systems into complete chaos?

The coincidences are endless. Six weeks before the towers collapsed, a wealthy property billionaire purchased the lease to the site for $15 million and immediately set about revising the insurance policies to include cover against terrorist attacks. When the towers fell, he put in a claim for $7 billion – twice the insured value of $3.5 billion, on the basis that there were two attacks. Despite resistance from the insurance companies, his claim was upheld by an appeal court. Not a bad profit, eh? It was even better when you consider that the building housed illegal levels of asbestos within the construction, estimated at a cost of $1 billion to put right.

The most compelling (and for me disturbing) suggestion that 9/11 was an inside job is that the towers actually fell as a result of a controlled demolition. Footage of the towers collapsing clearly identifies "blowouts" in the floors immediately beneath the crumple zones, which cannot be explained as anything other then separate explosions, as part of a controlled detonation. A seismograph of the area indicates a series of small tremors at the very base of the towers immediately before they collapsed. Wreckage of the collapsed towers shows steel support beams sliced in exactly the same way that a controlled demolition would cause. Tenants of the tower reported strange blackouts in the weeks before the collapse and work taking place on empty floors that, after the work was complete, remained empty. Did you know that sniffer dogs, trained to find explosives, were inexplicably removed from duty five days before the towers collapsed? Look at the footage again. Do you really see a tower collapsing randomly or does it look like one of those controlled implosions you see on TV? If you still have doubts, track down footage of tower seven, complete with initial internal crumple, a sure fire sign that the building was demolished. Why does a BBC news report tell us that reports have come in that tower seven has just collapsed, when tower 7 is still in sight behind the reporter? The police and fire service in New York generally accept that 9/11 was an inside job, but most of the key witnesses are dead. They died when the towers were demolished on top of them, unable to radio out to their comrades because the mayor had "coincidentally" issued them with faulty radio sets. (The mayor had a private security bunker in tower seven, by the way. Strangely enough, he decided not to use it that day.)

No footage of a plane hitting the Pentagon exists to this day, despite government claims that countless eye witnesses saw it. Black box flight recorders from ground zero have never been recovered, even though the initial clear up team has personally reported loading them onto a truck. The last recorded conversation from Flight 93 occurs three minutes before the actual time it crashed. Was it wrestled to the ground – or shot down by a government keen to bury the knowledge that passengers on the plane had discovered? Osama Bin Laden has never claimed responsibility for the attack; footage claiming as such has proven to be faked. Six of the bombers reported to have been involved were identified by the BBC as alive and well.

Why would the American government undertake such an exercise? A strategic paper on the future of America published some time before 9/11 stated that the country's development would be very slow unless a terrible event, along the lines of Pearl Harbour, catalysed a change in world politics and military strategy. Plans for an assault on Afghanistan existed long before the attacks took place – they were just waiting for an excuse to roll out. Furthermore, by throwing the Western world into a new "War on Terror" it was inevitable that attention would soon turn to Iraq, with images of the burning towers still fresh in the minds of an American populace that needed convincing. On September 10th, an internal inquiry at The Pentagon identified that nearly $3 trillion government funds were unaccounted for, the message buried as quickly by the collapse of the Twin Towers as those unfortunates who happened to work in the tower that day. Tower seven housed offices for the CIA and the government's internal fraud departments. When it collapsed evidence of billions of dollars of corruption investigations went with it. Convenient, eh?

For every conspiracy theory, there is a counter argument. I'm a naturally cynical person and I'm not a believer in conspiracy theories. But for me, the overwhelming factor here is common sense. Common sense tells me that the level of sophistication required to plan and carry out these attacks is greater than anyone could manage. Common sense tells me that the US military could / should have done much more than it did. And when you watch WTC7 fall to the ground, common sense tells me that it was not a terrorist act.

Frightening thoughts. Frightening times.

Summary: This will probably give you nightmares. And rightly so.

Sorry for the rating Phil, but I can't go along with you at all on this one, hence the "SU" rating.

All of the "evidence" you have used in your review, plus the footage from "youtube" that you mention is pure speculation, and not hard fact.

It has been shown to be total nonsense by experts. Look at "http://www.popularm echanics.com/technology/m ilitary_law/1227842.html& quot;, where many if not all of the conspiracy theories that have gained such widespread popularity are comprehensively debunked.
