Advantages: Cost effective in the long run
Disadvantages: none
Where did this phrase come from and why doesn't the British relate to it? Whenever the British go abroad they are usually one of the first to moan about dirty towns, cities or villages. Yet we do nothing about it over here. When you visit countries such as Austria, Germany or Switzerland the roads and pavements are virtually spotless. You'd feel very guilty if you didn't comply too.In Europe a lot of the countries automatically recycle their goods, and it is thought of as odd if you didn't. Admittedly I went through a phase when I recyled all my rubbish and took things to the tip or bottle banks etc. Having just had a baby it is difficult to cart all the bags and boxes into the car when you are busy with a baby. I would have preferred it if the local council provided a way for us to automatically do this on refuse day. I believe some councils provide plastic boxes for newspaper and tins. If this became a standard practice it would get the ball rolling and the British would become accustomed to doing this each week. Come on Britain you are always saying you want to become part of the real Europe, well wake up and smell the coffee or in this case the rubbish.

- 10/10/00 we are very lucky our council runs the green bin scheme where by you can just chuck your dry rubbish( except bottles) into the green bin, but it's only emptied once a month, but its better then nothing! |

- 10/10/00 an excellent point! we waste so many of the earth's natural resources through dumping etc. with all the consequences that everyone surely knows about by now. And yes, our streets are so much dirtier than some other European countries that it is an embarassment. I think that people do not feel inclined not to drop litter when they are so dirty in the first place another piece is seen not to hurt. |
