Crikey, what an odd category this one is. 'What's in your bag?'
I was expecting all the reviews I read to be by women but to my surprise there were a few men lurking in the category too. It reminds me of that episode of Friends where Joey gets himself a feminine-type bag for an audition he has coming up.... the others think he just looks girly. Very funny.
Initial amusing visions of Utero and Proxam walking down the street clutching their handbags and getting out the mascara were sadly dashed when I realised it wasn't female items in their reviews but large shoulder bags instead (I couldn't say whether they own handbags as well). Anyway if they can do it so can I.
Mine isn't really a shoulder bag, more of a small rucsac, the kind of thing you take as hand luggage on a plane or when you're going on a day trip somewhere.
Contents
-----------
One Sony folder with A4 pad
I worked for Sony a few years back and they give you a few freebies when you start. One was this nice blue and black leather thing that I still use today.
Personal Records
As I’m still unemployed I carry around a lot of personal details should I need them for interviews/jobs: A CV, 1001 application forms for temping agencies and jobs, and lots of ID evidence like passport, bank statements, medical certificate etc.
Rail Timetables
These are indispensable because I’m always travelling around the North West. I have a few of them because I switch trains a lot. I use the guides for the Clitheroe/Manchester Victoria line, the Bolton/Manchester line and the Manchester Airport/Windermere line. And sometimes the odd Virgin timetable if I go further afield.
Learn Direct Brochure
I was handed this last week as a possible guide to finding a course to update my web developing skills. I can do HTML and CSS but things like Dream weaver, Fireworks, Perl, PHP and CGI are unknown territory and that’s what many employers ask for in web design jobs these days.
Waterproofs
Being out and about so much means that there’s a good chance I’ll get caught in a few rainstorms. Umbrellas can be a nuisance to carry about so I always carry my waterproofs with me. One blue cagoule, one green pair of over trousers (or whatever they are called).
A Book
Train travel can get very boring if there isn’t any pleasant scenery to enjoy so a book is always kept handy. My last one was a biography of Harrison Ford.
MP3 Player
I’m not the kind of fellow who goes out buying gadgets like Ipods and mobile phones willy nilly but someone bought me an MP3 player for Christmas and it’s become very useful. It’s about the size of a small cigarette lighter and can store an awful lot of music. Finally I can listen to all those tracks that I’ve had stored on computer for years without having to burn them on to a CD.
Wallet
Plenty of stuff in here: Darwen Library card, debit card, ISA card, National Insurance Numbercard, various business cards from employers, WHSmith clubcard (which barely gets used anymore), spare passport photos if needed for an ID card, one BT phonecard (it’s from 1997 and STILL hasn’t been used up!), money, one book of stamps, some receipts, and finally, one battered and torn Burtons £5 gift voucher that I won at work in 2003 and never used.
Also: One pen, black biro, one HMV Gift Card, unused (if only it were for play.com instead… everything is so much cheaper online!), one address book and one floppy disk with CV.
And that’s yer lot. Nothing very exciting there I’m afraid. Very useful to me though and I don't go anywhere without it.
Summary: What's in LF's bag? Not much....

- 16/02/06 An umbrella is more nuisance than "One blue cagoule, one green pair of over trousers"? How is that possible? xx |

- 13/02/06 I love nosing in other people's bags! What a practical person you are, everything very useful. Where's your mini tool kit/ toothbrush/ mediicine cabinet that everyone else seems to carry?!! I was amused at your waterproof trousers though, that's got everything covered then! Susie |
