Advantages: Some academic/intellectual interest
Disadvantages: Gratuitous, violent and disturbing
I think I must forget really bad films I watch as I cannot remember any that stick out for being 'bad'. I do however remember films that were so unpleasant I never want to watch them again; so, if you'll allow me to go a little off topic I will tell you about them although I have reviewed them both separately on here so look for those reviews if you want more information.
The first of these films is Bad Lieutenant, directed by Abel Ferrara and starring Harvey Keitel. I watched this film on the recommendation of my Religious Studies lecturer when I was planning to do a dissertation on religion and film for my MA. Whilst it is a very useful film in terms of academic study regarding religion, this film is horrible. It is dark, sleazy and gratuitous. Harvey Keitel gives a good performance as the depraved lieutenant but it is a performance I never want to watch again.
The other film I never ever want to watch again is Irreversible, directed by Gaspar Noe and starring Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci. The scenes run in reverse order and depict a night out which ends (or begins depending on how you look at it) in violent tragedy. The most unpleasant bits include rape, sodomy, someone getting their head caved in with a fire extinguisher and someone getting their arms broken. The film does not leave anything to the imagining and after watching this I could not sleep as every time I closed my eyes I was faced with the repeating image of Monica Bellucci being kicked in the face. It is an incredibly distressing film and this is intensified by scenes of strobe lighting and heavily distorted music which left me feeling dizzy and on the verge of some sort of fit. I would never recommend this to anyone.
Summary: Avoid at all costs
