Advantages: Different interpretations on the topic of writing.
Disadvantages: What does the heading mean?
WRITING
Mmm what shall I write about writing? Does the title mean writing as in writing a book, or does it mean writing as in handwriting? Or does it mean writing written by someone else? A somewhat difficult topic to review don’t you think – there are so many different interpretations of “writing,” but nevertheless I will have a go!
HANDWRITING
When I was at school neat handwriting was insisted upon, and from the age of 8 we were taught how to do joined-up writing. We had to use pen and ink, not a ballpoint pen, our pens had to have a nib which was dipped into an inkwell (showing my age now I suppose!). We had to practise those loops and curly strokes for various letters, and even now I still write in the same way.
But what about more modern methods of handwriting? Nowadays at school pupils have roller ball type “handwriting” pens, which they use to practise the joined up stuff. Gone are the curly strokes and loops, straight lines are preferred these days.
And what about in America? Whenever I have seen anything handwritten by an American the handwriting has all been similar, with lots of loops and carefully joined up letters.
What about old people? Some of them are beautiful writers, using almost copperplate and one old gentleman I know never used anything else to write with except his favourite fountain pen.
Is there anything else to say about this kind of writing? Well, yes of course, there is calligraphy. An art in itself, something I have always wanted to learn to do, I have the books and the pens and paper, just don’t seem to have the time to practise.
CREATIVE WRITING
Well now this is another topic on the subject of “writing.” This is about churning out creative thoughts and putting them onto paper (or the web) for others to read, or simply for your own enjoyment. People write poetry, they write diaries, they write stories for magazines or send letters to newspapers. All of this comes under the heading of creative writing.
They say everyone has a book in them, if you have a burning ambition to become a writer then start by looking online at some of the writing courses that are offered. Or buy a magazine from W H Smith or Borders, there are several American writing magazines available and in the UK you can obtain Writers Forum and Writing Magazine. All very useful if you think you can write. But hey, hang on a minute, if you write reviews on Dooyoo then you are already a writer!
WRITING BY OTHERS
By this I mean stuff written by others, famous authors and not so famous ones. Take Victor Hugo for example, one of my favourite authors, he wrote Les Miserables and other well known works. His writing is very deep and meaningful, if you have not read any of his writing then you really should.
Or what about Shakespeare or Dickens, or the Bronte sisters or Jane Austen? All these are famous for their writing. Or what about Catherine Cookson or Jeremy Archer? Many of us have our favourite authors, we appreciate their kind of writing and enjoy reading what they have to say.
We may have a favourite newspaper columnist, perhaps a gossip column writer or a political writer.
If you are an aspiring writer, then the first lesson is to make sure you write something every day. Maybe you want to write a novel, it will take a long time, but you can start by writing a few paragraphs a day. Alternatively, start by sending letters to the readers’ pages of your favourite magazine or newspaper.
LASTLY
One last word on the subject of writing - about writing letters? Many a time I have heard people bemoan the fact that letter writing seems to be a lost art, but I think with the advent of e mail we have in fact revived the old art of letter writing, it is just done in a different way.
If you have read so far, then perhaps you will have a clearer idea of the different interpretations on this topic of “writing.” I shall look forward to reading others’ reviews on this topic and see what they make of it.
Summary: Writing for pleasure, handwriting, reading others'writing
