Newest Review: ... Manchester United at Old Trafford. By now Ron Atkinson had taken over at Villa Park and Yorke, who suffered a number of injuries, had a stop-start career at the club during Big Ron's reign, missing out on Villa's 1994 Coca Cola Cup win, as the Midlanders beat Manchester United (again) 3-1. It was the advent of Brian Little as manager at Aston Villa which brought out the best in Cole ... more

... and he scored the third goal when the club beat Leeds United to win the Coca Cola Cup again in 1996. He was now a mainstay of an exciting Villa side, and in 1996-97 had a wonderful season, becoming the first Villa player since 1981 to score 20 goals...more

Premium Review Dwight Yorke: Native New Yorke(r) (561 words)

An oldie but goodie - why does/did Eric Cantona always play with his collar turned up? Because he has to carry Cole... That joke was quite funny round our way at one moment in time, but after Monsieur Cantona moved on, it was left to a little West Indian called Dwight Yorke to bring the best out of our Andy... Born on November 3, 1971, and born in Canaan, Tobago, Yorke was first spotted and brought into the big time by Graham Taylor in his first spell as Aston Villa manager, before he went on to have such a disastrous spell in charge of the England team. Villa were on a pre-season tour of the West Indies, and decided to take a gamble on the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Remember Samson and Delilah... (296 words)

Remember Samson and Delilah... well Dwight and Jordan is obviously the modern day version. In the biblical tale.. Samson had all his hair cut off by Delilah and lost his strength. Well what has Jordan cut off of Dwight??? When he came to United he started brilliantly. He gelled brilliantly with Cole, and they were deemed as one of the most feared strike force in the country, if not Europe. He was keen, quick and had great finishing. So what has gone wrong??? Perhaps it was the fact that United had such a plethora of top strikers last year, and Yorke didn't get too much of a look in. That though has only worked to keep players ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dwight Yorke: Score on the pitch and not off! (275 words)
by - written on 25/06/01 (Useful, 186 readings)
Rating:

Could it be £12 million for just one good season? Dwight Yorke cost £12 million from Aston Villa and seemed to be one of the best buys of this season. He linked up very well with Andy Cole and formed a deadly partnership in the league and in Europe. Dwight was very much behind Manchester United’s success in getting the treble in 1999 but not without the help of last minute chip ins from Sherringham and Solskjaer. This season especially, he’s been playing with two unfamiliar strikers, namely Jordans breasts! Could this be the reason he has slumped in form? Apart from the Arsenal game this season (2000/2001) at Old Trafford he has not played like ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Back to his best (332 words)
by - written on 27/02/01 (Useful, 12 readings)
Rating:

Dwight Yorke earned rave reviews as an Aston Villa striker, and when Manchester signed him a few years ago he was an instant hit. Both him and Andy Cole were on fire, forming a great partnership on the pitch and a friendship off the pitch. Yorke and Cole were the automatic choices for Unitd, keeping Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer out of the team. Everything was looking good for Dwight Yorke, he was right up at the top of the scoring charts and his team were winning trophies (as usual). But this season Dwight Yorke has had trouble getting into the starting team, whilst he was unavailable for selection, Teddy Sheringham was on great form and now secured ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dwight Yorke: Nothing to SMILE about for Dwight (302 words)
by - written on 30/01/01 (Useful, 20 readings)
Rating:

With Manchester United crashing out of the FA Cup, I am surprised that Yorke didn’t start or didn’t come on earlier. United created a lot of chances and needed a cool head, a clinical finish in front of goal. Cole and Sheringham both missed easy chances. Last season, Yorke was brilliant, his link up play with Cole and his goal scoring record in the league and Champions league were excellent. However, this year he missed a few games at the beginning due to international duty and seems to have been punished since. He’s been out more recently because of injury, but I think he’s one of United best strikers and should be in starting line ...  Read the complete review
