Advantages: My favourite music
Disadvantages: Only 10 places to fit your favourite songs
These are the top ten songs from my MP3 player.
I expect two things from the music I listen. Some songs lift me up with the energy and power they have and some songs are soothing for different emotional states, more contemplative material. Some of them have both qualities. As time goes by more of them are becoming a sentimental baggage of my life. Here they are, not in any particular order.
10. Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
When I've heard it first time I had an impression of uplifting and optimistic song despite the lyrics. I was very surprised when I heard the whole background story and singer's faith. I still listen to the song as a joy of life hymn for reasons only known to me I guess.
9. Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies
Like you are eating vanilla crème brulee topped with cinamonn and pieces of fig marinated in cognac. Pay attention to the sudden but suttle twist of her voice at 2:25 point. Like you bit that fig in the smooth crème.
8. Perfect Day - Lou Reed
What a wonderful world - but not too cheesy way to say that.
7. Here Comes Your Man - Pixies
It is time to wake up and get that energy boost.
6. New Year's Day - U2 (live from album Under a Blood red sky)
Another shot of energy drink. Piano which sounds like a guitars, guitars which sound like machine guns. Lovely love song.
5. Everybody Hurts (Live acoustic version) - Corrs
Easy way to fit REM and Corrs on my list. Someone would say that it is too mellow for a tough guy I am pretending to be. Well I have to stop pretending. Harmony of the voice and music makes me stop doing whatever I'm doing (even if I'm driving) and LISTEN.
4. Ask - The Smiths
The typical Smiths song with the soft electric rhythm of guitars and Morrisey's trademark voice. Refreshing like a shower on a hot day.
3. Don't Know Why - Norah Jones
See number 9. Very sincere music and performance. I can imagine myself laying on the tropical beach sipping cocktail of unusual colour and unkown ingredients while listening to this song.
2. Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads
It is time to get phylosophical and tackle midlife crisis. It is easier when you are not alone (there is a bunch of quasi intellectual Americans trying to get you suicidal)
1. Until the End of the World - U2
It is obvious the I like U2. I don't like Bono's attention seeking attempts to save the world and be everything else apart from being the singer.
(What's the difference between Bono & God?
God doesn't walk around Grafton street in Dublin acting like he is Bono.)
I like the music, genuine talent and energy they have. This song is from their arty phase which is not my favourite but lyrics are a bit twisted, music powerful. When I listen I always feel I'm in love. I am always thinking of her...
I believe that after this unpacking of my emotional bagage you can guess what is the year I was born, which car I drive and colour of my eyes.
While you are guessing here it comes - something completely different...
Summary: On a perfect day sweet Jane don't know why love will tear us apart until the end of the world
