Advantages: Some fantastic memories
Disadvantages: You may not have heard fo these toys.
We all used to have favourtie toys when we were younger, I remember, I never wanted to depart with some of them, and most of these toys, you can now very rarely find. I say bring back all these good times, before all this technolog was invented!
These are toys I remember and loved from my child-hood. I'm sure some of you will remember some of them too & I'm sure it'l bring back memories.
1) PLAYMOBIL - Has been around since 1958, when the first toy (a racing car) was created. Playmobil is a great selection of toys for boys or girl any age. There are many different themes for Playmobil such as Pirates, Police, Knights, Rescue, Zoo, Sports, Castle, Doll House and many more. You could also buy figures for your play scene separately and they could move their arms, leg and head to position them how you want them. I remember a particular set I had which had a mother figure with a pram and a carousel, which you could seat the people into their seats and then spin the top, to make the carousel go round. Playmobil is just as popular now as it ever was and of course, they have an even more larger range and new, exciting products.
You can view products and buy them online from www.playmobil.com
2) FUZZY FELT - Was first launched in 1950 and has gone on to become on of Britain's all time favourite toys. Fuzzy felt consists of a board made of cardboard with a fuzzy look material on the front of the board which enables you to put the felt onto it, making it stay in place. Fuzzy felt came with lots of different shapes and themes so you could created different scenes, and of course when you want to change your picture you can just simply remove the pieces and start again. I particularly remember owning about 4 different sets of fuzzy felt and, when I used to go round my Nan's on a Sunday afternoon, I would always get the fuzzy felt out of the cupboard to play with.
You can still buy fuzzy felt from some shops, such as Hawkins Bazaar and you can even buy fuzzy felt cards from www.fuzzyfeltcards.com which are great for kids.
3) PEGBOARD - This consisted of a simple white board made of plastic with lots of little holes in, and with it you would get different coloured plastic pegs (red, green, blue, yellow) and you could use the pegs to put in the pegboard to create different pictures and patterns. Some of the sets even used to come with ideas, of what designs and pictures you could make. I haven't seen these around for ages, and I'm not even sure they make them anymore.
4) SYLVANIAN FAMILIES - Has been around for years. You can buy a family set of bears, badgers, rabbits, frogs and more. You can buy houses and play things for your family to live in and do. I used to have a windmill and a small cottage along with the frog family. You can even buy outfits for your little families and lots of different furniture for your sylvanian family house, including, baths, chairs, beds, sofa's and more. You can even buy food and pots and pans to make them feel more at home. Me and my sister used to spend hours playing this and I'm pretty sure most of it, is sitting up in the loft waiting for us pass it onto someone else.
You can still buy this in some stores and you can purchase it online from www.sylvanianfamilies.com
5) BARBIE - You all know who Barbie is, that beloved blonde doll which all the little girls love. I used to have a Barbie with really long hair and pink earrings, it came wearing some really funky (at the time) pink in-line skates and a tight pink dress with elbow and knee pads. I remember my face lighting up when got it. I always used to go round my friends house and we used to sit there for hours playing Barbie. I used to have a really old looking Barbie wardrobe, sofa, and chair and an dressing table.
Barbie is still the most popular girls toy and can be bought from almost every top shop.
6) WHACK ATTACK - This was a game which came in a cardboard box and was found with board games in the shops. You got a plastic hammer, with a soft head, a bright red timer and 5 dome shaped objects with a bit sticking out the top with a face on. There was also a counter on the bottom of these domes. The idea of the game was to wind up the timer and whack as many of the heads as you could with the hammer, they would then go down and take different times to pop up so you could hit them down again. As you hit the faces down it would count how many times you had hit that one, and then you could compare yourself to the other players and see who got the most.
It was a rather noisy game, as I'm sure you imagine. I haven't seen this game around for years, I can't even remember who makes it.
7) MARBLE RUN - This consisted of lots of bright plastic coloured pieces which could slot into each other. The you could just drop the marble into the top, and watch it race through the maze of cylinders, spinning wheels, chutes and bridges. When it got to the bottom and rolled out I used to pop it back in the top again. I used to play with this for hours and makes lots of different courses for the marble to go through.
You can still buy marbles run's from many shops such as Hawkins Bazaar, and other online shops.
8) LEGO - Lego products are sold all over the world. They are one of the worlds largest toys manufactures' and the largest in construction toys. The worlds children spend about 5 billion hours a year playing with Lego bricks. I'm sure you all know what Lego is?
They are simply bright coloured plastic bricks which fit together to form buildings such as houses, police stations and what-ever else you choose to make. In 1970 Lego Duplo was launched which are bigger bricks for more younger children, which were easy to handle and helped to develop their hand and motor skills. I used to have boxes full of Lego. Me, my brother and sister used to spend hours making different buildings and things to make a whole town. My sister owned a range which came will Lego horses and showed you how to make a stable and another one showed you how to make a hotel. With Lego you also got small Lego people, with different hats and hair-styles.
You can still buy Lego from good toy-shops and from www.lego.com.
9) TAP TAP ART - This consisted of colourful flat wooden pieces/shapes, each have a hole drilled through, so they can be held to the cork board with a metal tack. Endless possibilities for making bright, colourful scenes, figures and patterns. You even get a little wooden hammer to bang the tacks in. I used to play with this every time I went round to my Nan's house, it used to give me hours of fun. I'm sure many of you will remember this form your childhood.
This is still available from stores such as Hawkins Bazaar (www.hawkin.com)
10) LITE BRITE - Was made by Hasbro and consisted of a rectangular board (a bit like a peg board) with lots of little holes in it. With it you got lots of coloured plastic pegs and some sheets of black paper with some designs printed on them marked by little crosses. You would simply pop the sheet of paper over the pegboard and using the coloured pegs pierce through the paper where the little crosses were. Once you had finished your design, you could then flick the switch at the back of the peg-board and simply admire your wonderful design, light up in lots of pretty, different colours.
I haven't seen this around for years so not sure if you are able to still buy it or not, but you can play it online (although it doesn't have the same effect) at http://www.sfpg.com/animation/liteBrite.html
