Advantages: Keeps me amused for hours

Disadvantages: I don't get much else done sometimes!

I’ve been thinking long and hard about this category, after all I am addicted to games and have been since we first got a computer way back in 1992.

How do you choose 10 games that could be considered ‘favorites’? Well, firstly I’ve decided to pick the games I’ve played several times and still come back to simply because of their addictive game play.

I couldn’t really tell you which order I prefer these games because I don’t honestly know myself – so here goes!

Might & Magic 6 – The Mandate of Heaven.
This game is produced by 3DO New World Computing and I’ve played it so many times I know the story by heart.
Your job is to save the planet by destroying the enemy – simple! The game play is simple and the graphics are lovely, it was haled as a leader when it was released in 1996. With a simple interface and dual combat that could be played as turn-based or real-time it doesn’t lose its appeal despite its age.

Wizardry 7 – Crusaders of the Dark Savant.
Another RPG produced by Sir Tech. It was released in 1993 originally and then re-released in 1996 as Wizardry Gold.
The thing I loved most about this game was actually trying to create the perfect party. My son and I spent days rolling the statistics to try and create the best team we could. Anything was possible but some were much harder to get than others, for instance trying to create a fairy ninja took a lot of time and patience.
The storyline on this game put you against three other parties to find clues to the whereabouts of 11 map pieces. This is the first game I’ve played where you could actually lose!

Elf Balls.
This is a simple shareware game from Kewlbox. It plays like Tetris with a Christmas theme and you have to line up three or more matching symbols horizontally or vertically to remove them and score points.
I know this doesn’t sound parti
cularly interesting but the simplicity of the game and the elf that gives his opinion of your game play as it progresses makes it fun.
To give you a little idea of his humor, you get the option to turn off the music during game play and if you do he says “If the music’s too loud, you’re too old”!

Acropolis.
This is a combination of Zeus and Poseidon. This is produced by Sierra and was originally sold separately with Poseidon as the official expansion pack. They now package them together as Acropolis.
It’s a ‘God Game’ where you can build cities in ancient Greece and interact with various Gods including Zeus and Ares.
Game play is easy for the most part and each time you play it’s different because you make the decisions on how your city is designed.
This actually counts as two choices because each part can be played as a separate game!

Dungeon Keeper 2.
Another ‘God Game’ but this one has a nice twist! You play the dungeon keeper and your goal is to steal the portal gems by defeating the good guys.
There are several levels and you can also build your own ‘pet dungeon’. It’s another simple little game that can keep you engrossed for hours!

Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2.
Another double choice but I couldn’t decide whether part 1 or part 2 was better so I’ve included them both.
Produced by Black Isle this RPG broke the mould in the gaming industry. The graphics are rich and detailed and the game play is very involving. The story continues from part 1 to part 2 and, if you’re interested, it concludes with the expansion pack ‘Throne of Baal’.
This game also plays differently each time because of the choices you make so depending on how you play makes it easier or more difficult to complete.

Arcanum.
Now this really is an unusual RPG. It’s the first time a game has included new
technology with the traditional magics
The game is huge and the storyline can be a little confusing at times especially when you’ve got about a dozen leads and don’t know which one to follow up on first!
Playing the game as a technologist will open certain doors but close others which will ultimately make game play completely different next time round if you use magic. Some NPC’s react badly to magic users while some don’t like technologists.

Pokemon Series.
Okay, I’ve admitted that I played them so let me tell you why! My youngest son was totally into pokemon and wanted me to help him collect them all.
Sounds fair enough doesn’t it, but the thing is the games are actually quite good! I started off just helping and ended up collecting them all myself.
There are 6 pokemon games now, they are red; blue; yellow; silver; gold and crystal.
They are based on the cartoon series or is it the other way round? The story is about a young boy who travels the world battling other trainers to become a pokemon master. To collect all of the pokemon available you do need to have more than one game and there are 250 pokemon to collect!

Well there you have it, that’s my list of games that I’ve played more than once and have enjoyed all of them immensely!
You’ve probably guessed that I love RPG’s more than any other game and usually play on the computer, mainly because I can’t handle all the buttons on the console games!
