Advantages: education, help preserve the species
Disadvantages: sometimes cruel
I think zoos are sometimes are a good thing and sometimes a bad thing. They offer many advantages for children and the general public but offer some disadvantages to the species of animal.
Firstly zoo's have an educational purpose. They often give the public an insight to the animal's life, an oppurtunity that they would not normally get to see. Children can find out lots about the animal because some zoo's provide information about the certain animal. Also zoo's often provide a good idea for school trip's for children which give them a chance to get out of the classroom and learn. Zoo's widen the resources for teachers to teach children about the animals that are on this planet with us.
However some animal right's groups may not agree with this. They often protest about how cruel zoo's are to animals. They say that the animals which are in zoo's are not kept in a beneficial environment. Animals which are used for educational benefits don't show their true characteristics because the animals are kept in poor conditions.
But other people may argue. Zoo's look after the animals well. Also zoos help preserve the species of animal by keeping them safe and well fed where as animals might die of starvation in the wild if there is a shortage of food. If animal's in zoos get sick, they can be treated immediately to prevent their condition from getting any worse, while animals in the wild often die of disease's which are spreading around.
Eventhough the animals in zoo's are well cared for and are kept safe, some animals don't actually like being in zoo's. Research carried out shows that some animals feel confined in zoos and they often get bored. On the PETA website it says that sometimes animals in zoos hate it so much there that they can sometimes get a diesase that is related to being in zoo's.
In conclusion I believe zoo's are a good idea as long as they are monited about how they treat the animals. Zoo's are entertaing for children and also have an educational benefit surrounding them.
Summary: Zoos are okay as long as they are monited.

- 11/04/06 Im afraid you're a bit far of the mark on this one. To say that people who work in zoos are only concerned about profit and not the animals is not the case. Most of these workers work long hours, for very little pay, just because of their love for animals.
Also, when you're referring to the amount of space animals have, your arguement is typical of abroad zoos but there has been a much needed improvement in this country, so it unfair to generalise. |

- 07/04/06 Hi Zazza, I don't like cruelty in any form to animals but don't think that your review even touches on zoos or that your review is backed up by any evidence. Sure, common sense tells us that some people are in the zoo business for money, whilst others to protect endangered species such as the Pandas. There are two sites to the discussion, and I felt your argument, whilst passionately in favour of animals, was weak. Rachel X |

- 07/04/06 Many zoos are like this in the less developed world, however to apply this to all zoos is extremely simplistic and in many cases just plain wrong.
As far as I am aware, all zoos in the UK are non-profit organisations, if not actual charities, so the accusation of being profit-making scams is possibly even libellous! |
