Disadvantages: Some animals hard done by.

Zoos are a great place to take your kids. A place where you can teach them how not to treat animals. Cages of all shapes and sizes stuffed with animals in the wrong cages of all shapes and sizes. I’ll explain some of my own experiences with zoos, basing most of my opinion on a zoo I visited in Hannover, Germany.

Most zoos have an aquarium centre where the walls are stacked with fish tanks. These in my opinion are humane. Many of the fish in them are tiny and in relative terms their environment is quite large. They only have short memories and swim around in packs so I presume they are quite happy little creatures. On the other hand you go outside the aquarium and they have a huge 10 tonne Hippo wallowing aroung in it’s own excrement in a pool only just big enough for it to turn around uncomfortably. Now that to me is evil. These creatures live in wide African rivers and swampland with many others. They need the extra space.

The next cage/pool that sticks in my mind is the one which the croc inhabits. In Hannover zoo there was a huge 9ft plus crocodile in a tiny pool which must have only measured 15ft long at the most. No room for manoeuvre there. To top this level of cruelty, the poor little blighter had 2 Mark coins on its head. I witnessed it myself, little children lobbing coins over the side of the viewing glass trying to land them square on its head. They were trying to antagonize it as if it wasn’t already.

Then there were the shows. Very entertaining until you realise what is involved. One show that sticks in my mind was a man in a small pool popping his head in and out of a crocodiles mouth. I wish it had bitten it off now. The poor thing was drugged up to the eyeballs. There was also a watersnake show at the same time which wasn’t as cruel and less entertaining.

Anyway I’m not totally against zoos. Some of them keep wild animals that might go extinct if they didn’
t hang on to them so they can’t be all bad.
