Have you noticed that new kitchen appliances all seem to bleep at you? Not content with doing the job for which they were bought, they now have to communicate with us as well. Looking round the kitchen, Michael Wave bleeps when he's finished cooking. The freezer bleeps if the door is open for more than a few moments. The hob does the same to tell me that I've made a mistake, so it's become quite vociferous and the breadmaker interjects to tell me that this is the moment to add further ingredients or to get a freshly-baked loaf onto the cooling rack.
