I have never really wanted a dishwasher as I find washing up quite relaxing and it gives me time to think whilst washing. Recently though myself and my partner both work long days and most days of the week so we needed to make cleaning and housework as simple as possible so a dishwasher seemed the only solution. I didn't have the money to buy a brand new one so bought the bosch hotpoint dishwasher from a friend for £180 as she had only had it a year. When I looked online these dishwashers ranged from £300 - £450 so I thought at £180 I had got a bargain.
The dishwasher fitted really well as we have a black and white kitchen. Its a really glossy sleek black which makes it look quite expensive! It is roughly 85 cm high, 60cm wide and 60cm deep. I;m sure what the standard is but it fitted it the space I had in my kitchen.
When we fitted it and checked it over it was pretty clean to say it had been used for a year I was impressed. I still gave it all a good scrub and did a couple of washes with no pots in just dishwasher tablets to clean it all way through. I didn't have any instructions with it so really just learnt as I went a long. It is pretty simple inside with plenty of space for plates, cups and cutlery.
You can chose from 5 settings so it is easy to use. Once you have filled the dishwasher, added a tablet, chose your setting - I just use normal - press start and away it goes. I have used the half load setting before however now I just wait until the dishwasher is full before using it.
I don't really have anything to compare the dishwasher too but for me it does the job. My pots come out smelling clean, looking clean and dry ready to put away in the cupboards. It's saved a lot of time and for £180 its a bargain. I don't think I would pay the retail price not because it isn't worth it but because I am always on the look out for a bargain!
The Bosch Dishwasher SMS50TGB was delivered on a cold Monday morning in a wooden create the quality of the packaging was excellent the main reason for choosing this machine was the colour, black to match the kitchen.
After unpacking it and reading the insulation instruction which I found very helpful I got work connecting it up to the existing pipe work it was strait forward.
The dishwasher has now performed well over the last 3 months it has 5 programs and I have used all 5 and on all 5 programs it is very quiet it is difficult to hear it running we have large family an the book says it will take 12 place settings we have found the height adjusting baskets very useful when you have a lot to fit in.
I have found the controls easy to use and the led display kept us informed as to what stage it was at, I found it important to select the right program to get the best results, it washes the dishes well and uses very little water, only 12 litre on economy 50 program and have found the delay start up very useful.
It is very difficult to find any bad point about this machine as it has turned out good clean dishes over the 3 months we have had it.
i think that this dishwasher is good value for money, considering the general prices of dishwashers these days.
i must first admit that i personally hate washing dishes and fortunately this machine has given me and my partner more time to do more important things like watching tv :-).
it has a good looking and sleek design that fit well in my kitchen so thumbs up on the looks department.
the machine is very quiet when in use,so i had to check twice that it was on and fortunately it takes approximately 30 minutes to clean all the dishes perfectly so it is time efficient. good features like the height adjustment on the top drawer and the 'speed perfect' option to get your pots back quickly. i was pleased to see that it was easy to set up and was amazed at how efficient it was.
i have issues with the handbook, i feel like it is not precise enough to help with certain instalations
A few months ago my ancient Hotpoint dishwasher refused to work. It was already a sorry sight with holes in the cutlery basket and a top shelf that was almost impossible to pull out due to a broken wheel. I knew it was time for a replacement! As always I did lots of research before making my purchase. I knew I wanted a black model and that it had to have at least an A rating for energy efficiency. I was prepared to spend up to £400 and wanted something with a decent warranty. My search finally led me to look at the Bosch and Smeg dishwashers. I finally opted for the Bosch model sms50T06GB, based on some negative reviews for the Smeg. I was keen to get the best price and John Lewis came out on top when I factored in delivery and disposal of my old appliance.
What you get for your money.
I paid £403 in total and this included delivery, disposal of my old machine and connection. The base price was £369 and delivery is free. This model is not available to see in John Lewis and so it was with a bit of trepidation that I awaited delivery. I was really pleased with the sleek black exterior of my new dishwasher and think it looks very stylish in my kitchen. It is a standard size measuring 84.5 cm in height, 60cm in width and 60 cm in depth. It is obviously important to measure the space before buying to check the dishwasher will fit!
Once the machine had been connected it was time to read the instruction booklet. It is clearly written with good illustrations. The first thing to do is set the water hardness for your area. Your water utility company will give you this information if you are unsure. Once you have the information you can set the machine to automatically calculate the amount of salt you need to add. I live in a very soft water area so don't need to add salt.
Inside the door flat is the rinse aid and detergent holder. The detergent holder slides open and then clicks closed once you have added a tablet or detergent. The rinse aid cover opens by pulling and then snaps shut. The LCD display shows you when rinse aid is needed.
The dishwasher is a 12 place setting size. The door opens easily and inside are two large baskets. The height of the upper basket can be adjusted to allow large items to be place underneath. The lower basket has spikes that can be folded down to accommodate pans and baking trays.
The upper basket has groves to allow wine glasses to be held securely. There is also a knife shelf so sharp knives can be held safely. The cutlery basket has plenty of space for all my cutlery.
Once loaded you will need to select the programme you require. This is really simple and there are 5 programmes to choose from including intensive, normal, eco, gentle and quick. The time the programme will take is clearly displayed in the LCD window. In addition to the programme choice you can also select the *speed perfect* option. This will reduce the amount of time a programme takes by up to 50%.However according to the instruction booklet this option also increases the amount of water and energy are increased! Once you have selected the programme and any additional options you simply press the start button.
The machine has a half load option, although this is not one I have tried as I always have a full load! It is possible to delay the start of a programme in 1 hour steps up to 24 hours. This would be useful if you want the machine to start in the middle of the night for example.
When the wash cycle is finished the dishwasher switches itself off after 1 minute. This is designed to save energy. The energy rating for this machine is A+.
This machine comes with a 2 year manufactures warranty
My opinion- The pros...
I have tried to give you an overview of what this machine can do. However I have not gone into lots of technical detail as you can find that on the Bosch website. I am really pleased with my new machine! I love the stylish black finish and although I was worried it would show finger prints, it remains looking shiny with little cleaning effort! It has all the programmes I need and more! I tend to stick with the eco setting for most washes and this produces excellent results. The machine not only washes well, but also dries perfectly too. It is extremely quiet and in the first weeks of use I used to check to see that it was actually working!
I really like the slots at the top that hold my glasses in place safely. In the past I have cut myself when grabbing a handful of cutlery when unloading the dishwasher in a hurry. I really appreciate the knife shelf with its individual groves to hold sharp knives away from the cutery. This not only makes it safer, but also helps to protect knives from becoming blunt.
The intensive programme is brilliant for getting saucepans and baking trays clean. This washes at 70 degrees and takes over 3 hours to complete.
I find the dishwasher easy to load (with a few niggles I will explain later).
And the cons.... Overall I am very happy with this machine. However I do have a few complaints! The top basket is fiddly to load on the right hand side. This is because there is an upper shelf for utensils that makes it difficult to load underneath. I also find that the upper shelf is quite low making it impossible to load tall cups and glasses. It would be fine for teacups but as I use mugs this is not ideal.
The programmes are quite long (mostly over 3 hours!) I tend to use the speed perfect option to reduce the washing time. The manufactures state that in order to obtain optimum cleaning results water and energy consumption are increased. When using this option I also find that the drying results are not as good as with the longer programmes.
Although the instruction booklet is clearly written I still found some of the instructions difficult to carry out. For example it took me ages to learn how to set the water hardness for my area. In short, this is not the easiest of machines to learn to use! This is a well made appliance that will hopefully give me many years of service!
