My mother has just bought a Hotpoint First Edition dishwasher from the Argos Superstore in her local town. She has never owned a dishwasher before, and me and my sister were always trying to convince her to get one, as it would make life easier for her. My mother entertains a lot, and has lots of coffee mornings, so as you can imagine she has a lot of dishes to wash. Now that she has got her new dishwasher she keeps saying that she doesn't know how she managed without one, after she has had her dinner party, instead of washing pots, she pops all the dirty dishes and glasses in the dishwasher and puts it on in the morning. This dishwasher she bought has five different programmes, including a quick wash which is perfect if your pots are not really dirty, which suits my mum after her coffee mornings as most of the plates have only had a cake or biscuit on it. The machine also has a water hardness adjuster which is good as different parts of the country have different types of water, luckily her water is quite soft, unlike mine which is hard and causes a lot of limescale on my kettle and washing machine. I like this dishwasher very much, and when mine breaks down, I will definitely buy one, as her Hotpoint is bigger than mine, and has tons of useful features.

I used to own a dishwasher in my previous home but when we moved, it was damaged by the removal men (and no, I hadn't taken out removal insurance!) so I was without one for 4 years. My daughter was doing the washing up for me - bless her - and regardless of how well she did it, the crockery and cutlery never looked sparkling as they had with the dishwasher. So, on the spur of the moment, after being offered a great discount from my catalogue, payable on monthly terms and buy now pay later, I decided to get another one. This time I went for Hotpoint purely because there were only 4 dishwashers in the catalogue within my price range and Hotpoint was one of them. Since having it installed, I've been pleasantly surprised at its performance. True, there has been the odd spoon occasionally with a bit of food dried on, but that has been very rare. Everything comes out gleaming. It's quieter too than my other dishwasher which would thump thump while it was washing. So, touch wood, it's great and I would definitely recommend it.

When my appliance engineer advised me that I should consider replacing my aging dishwasher on its annual service this year, I must admit I was devastated. It has been part of the family for so long without trouble that I really didn't want to part with it, but a design fault meant that the electrics were accessible to little fingers, and with a small baby in the house, there was a risk that when she starts to crawl she could be electrocuted, so I really had little choice. He advised me to try a Hotpoint, and if I could get one the DF53 was the best buy around, so taking his advice I toddled off to the shop to cane the credit card. After many difficulties - I will deal with Powerhouse in a seperate reveiw :-( my dishwasher arrived. The instruction booklet is minimalistic, but then the machine is so easy to use that you dont need instructions. It is sleek and glossy on the outside, clean and simple on the inside, a quick glance is all it needs to see if the salt level and rinse aid needs topping up, as they both have clear indicators, there is a neat little compartment for detergent, or a little holder if you prefer the tablets. There is a nice lot of room for dirty dishes - amply handling a family of five. The cleaning is good, but by far the best thing about it is the fact that it is so quiet - silent in fact. The first time I used it, I actually unplugged it and tried again because I didn't think it was working! It is so silent that the baby can sleep in the kitchen next to it whilst it is working.A 'dream' machine. Now I wish I had bought it years ago.

I've had this dishwasher now for just under a year and generally speaking I've been pretty impressed with it. Until now. Now we all know that appliances go wrong from time to time so I wasn't completely horrified when this happened to me. (The dishwasher appeared to get "stuck" on it's cycle and would constantly just rinse the dishes). I called the engineer and described the fault. As soon as he turned up he was quite sure he knew what the problem was without even looking at it - the heater element had food stuck to it. Now I always believed that the removable filter (which of course should be regularly emptied/cleaned) was there to prevent any items passing into the system. The answer I got was to rinse everything before putting it into the machine. Don't get me wrong, I ALWAYS clear the plates of food but surely the whole point of a dishwasher is to wash the dishes!!!!! So if I have to rinse all the dishes before putting them into the machine then I'm going to be rather annoyed at buying it. Let's just say I'm glad that I took out a 5 year extended guarantee because I think I'll be needing it...... (Apart from that - the usual review - lots of storage inside, washes dishes well etc...)
