The Scuba pro valve protector cap is a very simple piece of equipment for protecting the valve at the top of a Scuba diving air cylinder.
The valve protector slips over the valve at the top of the cylinder easily to offer protection against damage during carrying your cylinder between to a dive site. This protects the o-ring in the valve from exposure to dust and debris, If you release a bit of air from the cylinder to dry the valve first before slipping this protector into place it will prevent seawater corrosion to the o-ring making it last longer and avoid equipment issues when diving. By removing the chance of sand or debris getting into tthe valve, this stops the change of any bits getting into your regulator and the ultimate result of inhaling them. Although it would only be a grain or two of sand, I prefer to avoid breathing them in.
Being made of a black material, it doesn't stand out and I would personally prefer a more brightly coloured valve cover when I look to replace it. Diving cylinders all look very similar and it is good to have an identifying attchment so that your cylinder doesn't get mixed up with others when it is put into a dive shop to be refilled with air. Rather than having my name scraweled on the cylinder with a marker pen I think a colored, more uniqu valve protector would act as a good identifying feature.
The valve cover includes a ridged area the the top which can be used for storing spare o-rings. Personally I don't use this as I keep my spares in a sealed container which hopefully prolongs the life a bit. You may feel it's good to have a spare to hand, but if it has been stored here for a while and taken underwater the material of the o-ring may degrade. It's a nice feature but ultimatley not really needed.
The ridges along the side of the valve protector make it easy to grip when putting the protector into position or removing the cover. They make it possible to grip whilst still wearing gloves after a cold dive which is pretty useful in my opinion.
The plastic is smooth without any rough or sharp edges that will cut you. The plastic does feel a bit lightweight and the loop at the side feels like it could easily break off if it gets bent.
The protector will fit most standard valves, although if you have an unusual one just check it looks right before buying.
The tank protector sells for approximatley £3 which is fairly reasonable. After all it really is only a small lump of shaped plastic. This is about the same price as all other valve protectors I have seen in dive shops and it is not really an item that has much variation. Personally next time I will go for a coloured one and try to opt for one where the plastic doesn't feel so flimsy, so will pick a different brand.
Overall I definitley think it worth having a valve protector, but pick a coloured stronger version than this one. 3 stars because it does the job....just personal preference would make me pick another one next time.
