Ancol Cintronella & Eucalyptus Shampoo
by rolletrog ~~*~~*~~ Ancol Citronella & Eucalyptus Shampoo & Conditioner ~~*~~*~~ ~~*~~ I never knew you had dandruff ~~*~~ In the 5 and a half years I've been owned by my chocolate Labrador, Pig, I think she's probably had 4 or 5 baths. I don't believe in removing the natural oils in her coat by shampooing her ... fat butt but I do hose her off with a warm hosepipe when she's particularly filthy. Pig is my first show dog and still I never bathed her for a show - a quick rub-down with a newspaper brings out the shine beautifully in a lab and whereas you want shine, you do not want a soft coat - a lab should have a harsh feel to it. Thus, fatty bum bum has only been shampooed when she's rolled in something revolting or for Christmas at Granny's. Pigsy got me interested in showing and I then purchased the Irish Water Spaniel, Puddle who unfortunately and somewhat ironically drowned recently. During her 2 and a half years the poor thing was bathed weekly and anyone who's owned one of these knows they are a stinky breed. They too have natural oils which makes for a greasy coat and thus creates their signature liver puce colour. I tried many shampoos for her - some increased the curl or gave her coat volume and some were just bloody expensive but the one I liked the best was Ancol's dark coat shampoo. ~~*~~ So healthy, it shines ~~*~~ My main reason for purchasing it was baby Oink - my black lab who's just turned 1 (Happy Birthday Fat Pants). You know what it's like - new puppy combined with a trip to pets at home, results in a £100+ bill. Anyway, this was on offer for £1.50 (usual price is about £3) and it proclaims to be good for black and dark coats which seemed perfect for my girls. Maybe the thing that really sold it to me was the picture of a black lab on the front - I am that fickle. It's a clear plastic bottle so you can see exactly how much of the black stuff is left inside as you use it. It contains Chamomile oil, Lanolin, Citronella & Eucalyptus and claims to contain the finest natural detergents which is nice but since they don't have to list the actual ingredients, we'll never know. I like the combination of these ingredients for my pooches - Chamomile oil is regularly used to soothe skin and is a natural anti-inflammatory, Citronella is supposed to be an insect repellent and may help keep the fleas, mites and ticks at bay, Euchalyptus oil tends to have the same effect on pooches but can have calming influences too and Lanolin is naturally absorbed into the skin and hair moisturising and improving the elasticity as it goes. ~~*~~ It does beautiful things to your head ~~*~~ The instructions say to dilute the shampoo 15 parts to water - sometimes I do this, other times when it's ruddy cold and I'm freezing after a full days walking, I put a blob in my hands, rub them together and then squidge it all over the already soggy doggies. It is important to rinse them thoroughly which isn't easy when the little black one is trying to bite the water coming from the hosepipe or the Pig is doing the hot floor dance and won't let you rinse it from her botty. I then give them a rough towelling, pop on their beautiful coats and leave them in the kitchen to dry with a bone. ~~*~~ No more tears ~~*~~ I have to confess, Pigsy may have got a wee soap sud in her eye and though she didn't cry, her eye was red. Not to worry - she's rock hard and soon got over it. My girls don't particularly enjoy their hosing sessions but they like the shampoo being rubbed into their backs and they know a biscuit awaits them afterwards. The smell of this shampoo is lovely - a lemony fresh waft accompanies the girls whilst they're drying though the day after you can only smell it when you're having cuddles and blowing raspberries on their bellies. For me this is perfect - I don't want Oinky to go into the show ring smelling false as 'any product which alters the natural colour, texture or body of the coat may be present in the dog's coat for any purpose at any time during the show' - the kennel club has spoken. ~~*~~ Because she's worth it ~~*~~ Oink is worth it - her coat definitely looks lovely and shiny after use. On the odd occasion I've used it on Pig the chocolate simpleton, I don't think it's made any difference to the quality of her coat but it has made her smell fresh. It is my choice of product for a short coat beast especially as the price is so cheap and I'm also encouraged by the ingredients in it. In the case of Puddle Permhead, I don't think this shampoo did her curls any favour but she was nice and clean and easy to comb so the conditioner did help remove any knots. She retained her good smell for longer than the labs as presumably her longer coat kept it in more.Considering Oink has just celebrated her first birthday and I've got a third of a bottle left, it seems pretty good value for a doggy shampoo If you'd like some (I'm not sure it's suitable for humans though) it's available online everywhere but the official website is http://www.ancolpetproducts.co.uk/show.php?groupid=DOGMSH&colour=0&itemid= Ancol make quite a few versions of shampoo so have a look for a more suitable product for your baby or contact them for advice if you're too indecisive: Ancol Pet Products Limited, Ancol House, Leamore Lane, Bloxwich, Walsall W. Ancol Tropical Fruits Dog Shampoo & Conditioner
by daisylee3 We must have had this bottle of dog shampoo for around a year now, if not longer! My dogs absolutely despise baths; muddy puddles = heaven but warm, soapy baths = torture, haha. I've used this around five times on the occasions that the dogs have been so filthy that a bath has been the only option (we usually just use wet cloths). We ... used this most recently around a month ago after Pip decided to not only roll in fox poo and a dead rabbit but to also go swimming in some water that smelt like an open sewer. She got absolutely soaking - the smell was vile and me and my boyfriend ended up having to heave her into the bath. She's got a very thick coat with a lot of folds around her neck and joints but despite this we only had to use a few large blobs of it and that was enough to leave her coat looking (and definitely smelling) much cleaner. I bought our bottle of this from Petplanet if I remember correctly and it is still available on there. It's also available from a wide range of other online pet accessory retail websites and it retails at around £3.35 which I think is a good price considering how effective it is. This stood out to me mainly because of the scent - it's tropical fruits fragranced which for a dog shampoo is quite unusual and most of the other brands that I've seen are unscented. Because dogs have obviously got a much more sensetive nose than humans I did wonder at first if it might smell unpleasant or overpowering to the dogs. When using this on them though I've never noticed any tell-tale signs of them finding it unpleasant or overpowering eg retching or anything like that and it smells really nice in my opinion. The smell isn't as sweet as I had expected, it's quite a subtle, fresh smell and it does definitely smell like tropical fruits. It's not a particularly natural scent but it isn't overlly artificial either. The shampoo is both a shampoo and conditioner and it has a formula blended with a range of natural ingredients including chamomile extract, aloe vera and lavender oil which are gentle on the dogs' skin. The shampoo comes in a rounded plastic bottle which is transparent meaning that the bright orange shampoo can be seen. The bottle has the blue and white Ancol logo on the front as well as a picture of a border collie and of course the product name. The back of the bottle has directions on how to use the shampoo and the manufacturers state that there are at least 20 washes in each bottle which seems about right - we've used it five times and there's still plenty left. The bottle is squeezy and the plastic cap on the top pulls off to reveal the flip lid which has a small dispenser hole meaning that it is easy to control how much comes out at once. Using the shampoo is really simple. Just squeeze a 50 pence sized blob out and rub it over your dogs damp coat. I didn't use this on her head as I didn't want it getting near her ears, mouth or nose. The texture is thick but it spreads over the fur easily and it lathers up quickly, producing a slight foam. I left it on Pip for around 30 seconds and then rinsed it out. The shampoo is orange so I was easily able to make sure that it was all rinsed out as it was quite prominent against her dark brown fur. Using this and then rinsing it all out took under five minutes. The full results weren't obvious until we had dried her - her coat was completely clean and she smelt a lot nicer. The smell unfortunately wasn't noticeable on her fur even around an hour after we'd used it but this isn't a huge disadvantage. Considering that this is a 2-in-1 shampoo & conditioner I was expecting perhaps a slight shine to her coat which I can't say I noticed. The most important thing though is that it did clean her fur and it didn't irritate her skin, or mine. The shampoo is suitable for dogs and puppies and I recommend it. It's effective and good value for money. There are a few very minor disadvantages but these aren't enough for me to knock a star off. I give it five out five stars. Read the complete review |

Ancol Ergo Double Sided Pin and Bristle Brush
by daisylee3 All of my dogs moult a lot, especially my husky and chocolate labrador so I make sure that they are brushed regularly to get rid of any dead hair as it can be quite itchy for dogs when they moult. I also find it important to brush them regularly because we usually end up with clumps of hair all over the living room floor if we don't. ... Brushing them regularly doesn't completely solve this problem but when they do moult a lot less hair comes out which saves me from spending ages sweeping up!! I've got two different dog brushes - one fancy one which is specially shaped and one basic one - this one - which is a simple double sided brush. I definitely prefer this one as it is more effective at getting dead hair out of my dogs coats and it also has a handle (unlike the more expensive one) so it is easy to hold. The brush has long metal pins on one side which go deep into the dogs fur, clearing all the layers of dead hair and they're also great at detangling the fur when it is coated in dry mud etc. The pins have got little plastic balls on the end meaning that if they make contact with the dogs skin they will not hurt and they also help stimulate the dogs' blood flow apparently. The other side has lots of soft but durable bristles. I find this side best for fussing my dogs with rather than actually brushing them - I usually just rub them on the head and ears and under the chin with it and they love it. I don't use the pin side on their heads though as although they're not sharp I worry that they might scratch them. The pinned side is bet for their backs and the backs of their legs which is where all the clumps of dead fur gather and my chocolate labrador who has huge folds around her neck loves it when I use this around her neck as it gets rid of heaps of dead hair. The brush is padded underneath the bristles and pins which makes the bristles a little more flexible and easier to brush all over the dog without having to hold the brush in a certain way or re-adjust the angle. The brush is suitable for a range of different animals including cats and it is suitable for any type of fur including curly. The brush is simple in design and it is made of a sturdy plastic. The colour scheme is blue and grey and the handle is easy to securely grip. The brush head is a good size so has a good cover area meaning it doesn't take ages to brush the dogs. The bristles are black and the pins are silver and made of a very sturdy metal. Getting all of the hair out of the brush is easy and it can be washed. I bought this from Wilkinson's and they also had a wooden version available. I paid around £6.00 for this brush and after around six months it is still in great condition - none of the bristles or pins have fallen out and it doesn't look worn or tatty despite regular use. Overall I highly recommend this brush and I give it five out of five stars. Read the complete review |
