I used to take my dog to work with me, and as she was a very nervous dog who barked absolutely crazily and really wound herself into a state everytime a customer came in, I had to do something to calm her down and stop her causing such an uproar. I tried the spray in a can, but found you had to get the timing spot on, otherwise the dog would not form the association with barking causing the spray.
After a lot of thought and considering other products, I purchased the Aboistop and have never looked back. It is a andjustable collar that fits around the dog's neck and clips in place. You insert a battery in the side of the unit and when the dog barks a spray of your choice (you can use odourless, citronella, or for really difficult barkers, mustard) is scooshed up under their chin as an instant discouragment from barking.
It really calmed my dog down and stopped her sympathetic nervous system from kicking in too much adrenaline- it seemed to take away her 'job' of barking and informing everyone (for miles around) of danger. Instead, she was happy to take a back seat and let others do the warning if they wanted to.
It's a temporary solution for whilst the dog is wearing it, but it does not solve the problem itself, you should seek advice from a dog behaviour specialist to do this. I had a few teething problems, which were soon sorted- i.e, it can be very sensitive to other noises, such as car doors banging shut. I put some electricians tape over the microphone to overcome this, with a pin hole to soften the sensitivity. Because of this, it should not be used when your dog is unsupervised for long periods. Also, the batteries are used up really quickly, so never leave them in the unit when the dog is not wearing it, or you will go through them really fast.
You can buy the refills and batteries pretty easily from specialist pet websites, but they do cost quite a bit (batteries around £5-6 each and spray £10-13).
Overall, a really useful product, but not one if you want all your barking problems permanently solved.
My son whose twelve now cant go out and play like others (as he has special needs ) so two years ago i thought i'd get him a little furry friend to play with , i decided on a jack russell as i had one when i was growing up
I knew what to expect with regards to the toilet training, chewing etc which was quicky sorted out .
But what i couldnt seem to control was th dogs repeated barking when he was put out the back garden .If anyone walked past the fence orfuther down the road he'd start up a full volume doggy barkathon .
After trying other suggestions from friends i came across a Aboistop antibark collar on the dog traing products website i hoped it might do the trick. It was £69.99 a bit pricey i thought ,but if it would end the noise pollution i knew it would be worth every penny
It was delivered within the week and by following the instructions in the pack i was able to easily fit it to our dog .So then it was time for the test let him out the back garden an wait till he saw someone, we didnt have long to wait and as soon as he barked the collar emitted a spray of citronella spray towards his nose silencing him instantley horray horray ,at least i knew it did what it claimed to. He was out the back for around 2 hours and hardly let out a woof every time he started to the collar did its job.
Im sure the neighbours are overjoyed as even though i dont leave the dog out there for long each day he still needs to go out and have excercise and fresh air in between his walks.
the kit comes with a cloth collar,
the spray unit
the citronella spray canister
and a battery
the spray canister is easily attatched to the collar after fitting the battery and filling the spray unit with the citronella liquid
The collar has a microphone built in which immediatley pick up the sound of the dog's bark and then it emits the spray up towards the dogs nose stopping in in his /her tracks in most cases the dog quickly learns that the consequences of barking and soon tires of it in most cases
Iwould highly recommend getting one if you have a very vocal dog unless you live in the middle of nowhere andcare lucky enough not to have any neighbours
When my dog was younger barking in the car was never an issue, she loved the car as she always know she was going for a nice long walk. As she got older and a lot bigger we decided to upgrade our hatchback for a much bigger estate car, in our eyes it would be perfect as the dog could go out and get as muddy and wet as she liked without it ruining the seats in the back.
How wrong were we, she started to put up a protest about being right at the back of the car and not directly behind us. At first we thought she was telling us she didn't approve of the car by continually barking at the back, but as time went on she would bark at cars people and anything that caught her eye.
This was such a surprise to us as she is usually very placid and quite, but in the car she was like a possessed animal that we could do nothing to stop, over time we found that we hated to take her in the car and therefore got much shorter walks where she couldn't be let off the lead, this was no good for her as her loved her walks.
Then on my annual visit to the vet I discussed the issue and he recommend this Anti bark collar, at first I wasn't convinced but it got to the point where I would lose concentration while I was driving as the dog was barking so excessively. So I bit the bullet and went a bought this bark collar that the vet recommended.
The Aboistop Anti-Bark Collar is designed to stop any unwanted barking while the collar is being worn by the dog, when the dog barks the chamber lets out a harmless spray directly under the dogs chin and therefore distracts the dog and stops the barking immediately.
The main part of the anti bark device is a small compression chamber the size of a box of matches, this is powered by a battery and has a manual on off switch so when the collar is not it use you can turn it off to save the battery life. The spray is emitted through a small hole at the top of the chamber when the dog barks.
The collar is made up of a strong material collar with a click clip fastening, to put the collar on just pop it around your dogs neck and fasten it at the back of the neck, being sure that the little compression chamber is directly under the dogs chin.
You do need to fill this chamber up yourself using an aerosol canister that is provided with the collar when you first buy it, It is exactly the same as filling up a lighter, just put the canister into the end of the chamber and apply pressure for several seconds and bingo your collar will be full again.
I have purchased this to stop the dog barking in the car but this is also very effective if your dog barks in your absence, just pop it on the dog before you leave the house and your neighbours will soon start to like you again.
It is recommended that you don't use the bark collar for excessive periods of time, so I would say just put the collar on the dog when they are likely to bark the most.
The Aboistop Anti bark collar is designed in a way that is humane to all dogs and is suitable for any breed. This collar comes in two different sizes:
STANDARED is for dogs over 8kg.
COMPACT is for smaller breeds, this smaller compact version emits less spray that the standard so if this doesn't cure your dog try the standard version.
The spray can come in various scents the most popular being natural and citronella odors, we get the citronella spray which really smells and the dog doesn't like it either, so this has stopped the barking in the car. During the first few car trips the dog pushed her luck and barked not to her usual excess but the car really stunk of citronella, I could cope with this as it was much better than the barking.
I purchased my collar for pets at home for 69.99, which is very expensive but I got a two year guarantee and a spare refill canister and battery. You can buy these online slightly cheaper but if you ever had a problem over that two year period you may not have any come back.
You can also buy extra refill canisters for 12.50 each and spare battery for 3.50 from any supermarket or camera shop.
This has really worked for me and my dog no longer barks in the car, it only took a few weeks to train her. She still is not perfect because if I forget to but the collar on she will bark because she knows she hasn't got it on.
I have not had to turn this collar spray on for a few months now, but I find that I still have to put it on her otherwise she will still bark, I think it is psychological and she has had it drummed into her that the collar means no barking.
This was very expensive and I did contemplate not bothering and persisting with the high pitched barking, but I would rather pay 70.00 for this than have the car wrapped around a lamp post.
I have no question that this has been a real lifesaver for me and the dog because if I had not been able to control it, I might have wrung her neck (only joking). Now the dog can still go on her long walks without irritating the life out of us.
If you have a dog that barks and you are unable to stop it then I would definitely invest in this, I will guarantee it will help. The worst thing you can do is shout and scream at the dog because it won't take any notice and you will just frustrate yourself.
Tilly is a three year old Jack Russell terrier who loves to bark - at anyone and anything, but mostly the postman, the doorbell, joggers, horses, sheep, cats and anything else she is, if truth be known, terrified of.
We have only had this collar for two days so take this with some caution. However, on a walk yesterday she ran at a horse, took one bark and shot back in shock as she was sprayed - she then stood docile while we chatted with the rider. What bliss! We did notice it going off while she ran around and this seemed to be caused by the noise of the jangling of her dog tag on her other collar, which we have taken off while she wears the anti-bark collar.
At the door it's been the same story - one mad bark and then silence.
When my internet shopping arrived it didn't solve the problem that we had to put her somewhere safe wile we unloaded - I think she would still have had a go at the driver, without barking!
There was an added problem - by this evening we noticed that she was barking more again, but then realised that the compartment needed a refill. That done, she was back to one bark when my father-in-law arrived to watch the match - quite a change from the frantic barking that means we can barely get to the door. So far, highly recommended.
After nearly 2 years of owning Douglas our mad Bearded Collie, his behaviour in the car was becoming beyond a joke! Every parked car, passed car and even road signs provoked a crazed bark and lunge at the passing object. It got so bad that when we arrived at Training Class one Sunday morning, he was in such a state his eyes were bloodshot! I asked the Trainer what we we could do and he recommended an Anti-Bark collar and hired one on the spot. Afetr three weeks, life has changed completely, ours and Douglas'. He is calmer and much nicer to live with, instead of barking at every bird, plane, motorbike, milk float, lorry or noisy car, he hust looks out the window and grunts! Our car trips are transformed to, what a joy! I have placed my order and await delivery. He is happier and we can hold converastions whilst driving, bliss!
When the dog barks a citronella fragrance is released via an aerosol in the collar
