Bakers Dental Delicious
Advantages: Healthy and good for their teeth.
Disadvantages: Quite expensive. Don't last long enough.
I have a westie and a chihuahua and I like to give them treats now and again - but I prefer to try to make these treats as healthy as possible. Something I do buy them fairly regularly is Bakers Dental Delicious which are treats which are also good for their teeth.
These are soft chews which come in a variety of meaty flavours, but certainly the most readily available, and the flavour I usually buy, is the chicken flavour. A packet which contains 7 of the chews costs £1.69 from Tesco - which equates to 24p per chew, which now I come to breaking it down, is actually fairly expensive for a doggie treat that really doesn't last very long at all. They come in foil pack which helps to keep them fresh, and this packet can be resealed which also helps to keep in the freshness (not that they stay around in my house long enough for that to really be an issue!).
These snacks apparently are nutritionally healthy as they are low in fat and salt, and they also help to promote good oral hygiene. Anything that helps to keep their gums and teeth healthy and strong is fine by me. Obviously, I have no evidence as to whether this actually works to improve their dental health, but I can say that both of my dogs have overall good health, including dental health.
The best judges of these snacks are obviously my dogs.....and they seem to approve. They do both woolf them down and seem very happy to receive them. However, I have to say that they really don't last very long and usually a couple of minutes after being given one each then the chew is no more. I would like for the chews to last a little longer - especially considering the price. Having said that, they do seem to enjoy them and they don't end up with me finding little bits of chew around the house.
Summary: My dogs like them.
