Bob Martin Ear and Eye Wipes
These wipes are specially designed to gently clean pets. They are suitable for both cats and dogs and each wipe contains a mild cleansing lotion designed to remove any dirt from around your pets eyes, or remove wax from inside/around their ears. The wipes are made by Bob Martin, a company who manufacture and sell a range of pet accessories including worming treatment, shampoo and so on. Bob Martin is a high quality brand that I know I can trust; all of the products I have purchased (eg worming tablets and flea treatments) have been effective and my dogs have never had a bad reaction to any of the products. Although Bob Martin products are on the higher end of the price scale, they're really good quality. The wipes come in packs of thirty which is a generous amount and one pack lasts for 2-3 weeks depending on whether my dogs eyes are in a bad way; it varies a lot and some days they look fine and others they're gunky and sore. If I use one I usually use both sides of each wipe to get the most out of each one, as they're not the cheapest!
Price and Availability
These wipes vary in price but I paid £2.49 for a pack of thirty, and I purchased them from Tesco's. I have just had a quick browse online to see if there is any shops that sell them for cheaper and I can see that a majority of pet retailer websites sell these at 50p-80p less than the RRP. They are also available from Amazon but for some reason the price is more than double what I paid (£5.62 not including P&P - what a rip off!) I am sure a lot of pet shops eg pets at home and so on will sell these too and I don't think you'd pay much more than £3 in most shops.
Packaging wise the wipes come in a thin plastic packet which is just like a usual packet of wet wipes, the colour scheme is baby blue, white and red and it is branded well with the product and brand name listed clea as well as a cute picture of a cartoon dog and cat side by side. The dog is wiping its ears and the cat is wiping its eyes. Above this picture the number of wipes is written. The wipes can be pulled out when the plastic seel is lifted up and once the wipes out it needs to be stuck back down to keep the wipes moist and fresh. The wipes can also be purchased in a box however I have the normal pack of wipes.
I've got four dogs and two in particular suffer quite badly with regular runny eyes, smelly and dirty ears and so on. They're both labradors which I am not sure has anything to do with their similar problems, however I have noticed that my chocolate labrador Pip suffers slightly more as her ears get really dirty and smelly incredibly easy leading to visible discomfort; she itches her ears with her back paws and shakes her head from side to side and although we do have a special ointment prescribed from the vets for her ears, I like to keep them clean daily to prevent the build up of muck and ear wax.
I usually use baby wipes, however when I saw these wipes which are specifically designed for dog and cat's ears and eyes I thought it was a brilliant idea so purchased a pack. I was keen on purchasing a couple of packs but decided due to the price to see if they were actually any good before spending a lot of money on them. I wasn't very impressed with them at first as they're considerably smaller than a normal baby wipe, but as they only need to be used on my dogs' eye and ear area this isn't too much of an issue.
The wipes are quite thin but not so thin that they feel bad quality. Each wipe is moist but not soaking, so when squeezed water/moisture doesn't come out which is good as my dogs don't like water on their faces. The wipes are unscented which I think is great; dogs have a really strong sense of smell and scented baby wipes etc probably stink to them so I like that these are unscented and there's no risk of them becoming anxious towards the wipes due to them smelling overlly strong.
The wipes are simple to use and it takes a couple of wipes to completely clear my dogs' eyes of any gunk. It takes two or three to get Pip's ears completely clean and I am always careful when touching the inside of her ears as obviously it's important not to poke the inside of a dogs ears about. The gunk from inside her ears sticks to the moist wipes well and the wipes are easily disposed of, they're thin enough to be flushed but I just pop them into the bin. The wipes are white meaning dirt shows up prominently on them which is handy because it shows how much gunk was in her ears, giving me an idea whether she needs a visit to the vets or not.
My dogs seem to enjoy these wipes. They recognise the sound of the packet and don't run away when I get a wipe out. I usually wipe their ears and eyes in the morning, or if i'm busy with my baby my mum will do it. They have gotten into the routine now of having their eyes and ears cleaned before they have their morning meal and they sit patiently while we clean them. The only thing is my yellow labrador Talia always trys to steal the dirty wipes and tries eating them, and they're obviously not a good thing for a dog to eat! This isn't any fault of the wipes themselves though so I can't mark them down at all for that and I really do reccomend them.
They're a little expensive, but they're gentle enough to be used around my dogs eyes, and they're unscented. To be honest though, unscented baby wipes are available for 99p or less and are just as effective as these. Cotton wool can also be used to clean a dogs eyes which is a lot cheaper. I overall would reccomend these wipes if you don't mind the price, however due to the price I personally will probably not re-purchase and instead I will just opt for some fragrance free baby wipes next time!
Summary: A bit pricey for some unscented, but basic wet wipes!
