Advantages: Nice fragrance, lathers well and seems to banish her fleas for a while
Disadvantages: Doesn't keep them away from her for long enough!
As many of you may now know me and my best mate share a poodle called Daisy. She actually belongs to my mate however we usually spend everyday together and what happens is we let Daisy decide where she wants to be and sometimes she stays and sometimes she follows my mate out the door. The past week I have had Daisy here and she's not looking to move out anytime cos I spoil her to death and have no rules though her other mummy does lol.
As a result of being here so much I have half the responsibly for taking care of her which is a pleasure. I of course have to walk her though picking up her poo is never going to delight me, feed her, fuss her and of course bath and groom her. The other night I spent half hour clipping her nails to which I had to google about the subject first to make sure I didn't injure her!
One of the drawbacks with dogs is of course wretched fleas and with Daisy having a wool coat being a poodle me and my mate just cant get rid of them. We've been to the vets and tried Frontline and allsorts, then she lies with her pink belly up we are used to seeing a flea and we usually only find one at a time. We've tried collars, deflead everything in sight and still up until last week I was not only still finding them on her but getting bitten and then finally over a two day period we found 9 fleas between us and were actually thinking about giving her a crew cut as a last resort.
I was very dubious when my mate brought this round and left it in my bathroom to use on Daisy. I haven't really ever heard anything good about Bob Martins and felt that if Frontline didn't work from the vets this probably wouldn't either as its only an over the counter product but knew we had to give it a go anyway.
Daisy is a dog that adores water so we bath or shower her often. She has been known when I'm in my bath to jump in and when my mates sits in the loo in her flat Daisy stands in the shower cubicle waiting for a shower and being white and living by the beach and her getting walked a lot we bathe her around every week.
This comes in a see though cylinder shaped plastic bottle with a large hole to get the shampoo out of and it has a twist on/off cap/lid in white plastic to the top of it and my friend bought this in a 150ml size and it cost about £2.00. Around the main of the bottle there is a yellow coloured label and on the front of that we are told that it is Bob Martin Flea Shampoo 'For dogs and puppies from 12 weeks' and that it helps maintain a glossy healthy coat and there is a picture of a collie dog on there. On the back of the bottle other information listed includes being told how to use it and dosage advice is given, warnings and ingredients are also listed and contact details for the manufacturer are given. Nice enough and highly informative packaging this is.
Well the shampoo is an orangey kind of colour and transparent. We are told to follow the dosage advice given on the bottle depending on the size of the dog and to mix it with 300ml of water. Dosage advice is simple. For a small dog (I.E Terrier) the bottle should give 5 applications, for a medium sized dog (I.E Collie) the bottle should give 3 applications and for a large dog (I.E Alsatian) the bottle should give 2 applications. Its gonna be easier to measure out half a bottle for a large dog but its just using your common sense to get 5 applications for a small dog like Daisy and it's a question of estimating really which I have done really well.
So oneI plopped some shampoo into my jug that I use to rinse Daisy with that lives in my bathroom and I get a slightly frothy looking mixture and apply it to her pre dampened/wet coat. This to me has a lovely strong fragrance to it. It has an undertone of a gentle floral smell to me, its slightly sweet with a hint of a medicated smell to it as well and like I say I really do like the clean, fresh fragrance that this has to it.
It lathers up brilliantly on Daisy and doesn't feel that it is drying her hair out which is important for her woolen coat as its so prone to frizz. I lather, rinse, repeat and lather again and then make sure I really do rinse her free of it before finishing. She comes out of the bath smelling highly fragrant and all I am left to do is get her dry and give her a groom.
After immediately washing her with this she really does smell of it however that fragrance dies down rather a lot and is barely there after a few hours. Her skin is the usual shade of pink under her coat, her coat is soft and not tangled and she shows no sign or irritation whatsoever.
She looks clean, fresher and is happy enough but what about the fleas?
Well initially I was really pleased with this product. I did a thorough flea check every day for a week and really thought the problem had disappeared. She had no flea dirt and wasn't scratching and I had no new flea bites on me at all. However this is only a flea killing treatment and for that it works but it doesn't seem to repel them cos bang on a week to the day I had bathed her there one was crawling across her belly as cheeky as you like. It wasn't too bad though she was due another bath and so I followed the same process and once again fleas seemed to be gone but bang....they did come back.
I do think this kills fleas but it doesn't keep them at bay so although I am happy enough to use this when I see a flea I do need something that tries to make them banish from visiting us totally still!
Available in all good supermarkets and pet stores and so on costing around the £2.00 mark.
