Advantages: lets you control your dog whilst letting them run about & sniff

Disadvantages: can get tangled and is bulky

Do you have a dog with antisocial habits? Perhaps they like to eat their smaller (or in my dog's case far larger) neighbours in the park. Perhaps they chase random bits of fluff for hours on end and fake deafness to your ever increasing pleading to come back, there's a good boy. Well this, product is for you!!

This is a great training aid. It consists of a lead which attaches to your dog's collar as normal, but the added bit is a retractable length (the length varies depending on what type you buy) hidden in the handle. To release the extra lead, you just click the button under your thumb and then you can stop it again by pressing the same button.

It's really good for when you have just gotten a rescue dog and you're not sure of their particular unique ability of embarrassing you in public yet. It lets them have a good sniff, but you can also haul them back when they try to grab that pesky jogger's ankle. Once you know what their problem is, and start to work on it, this lead means you have control whilst training. It's a good way to test recall without the risk of them running off.

The only downsides to these leads are- make sure you buy the tape version, as the cheaper rope one will cut your hands to shreds if you try to grab the rope whilst the dog is running (Trust me). The other negative is that it's really bulky, so you can't shove it in your pocket, or wrap it round one wrist- you need one hand to hold it all the time. It also holds the risk of clotheslining you WWF style when the dog wraps it round your legs if you don't watch out.

Saying that, I would not be without one of these and always have one in the boot. Although I use it far less now my dog's problems are solved, there are always other dogs who aren't so well behaved who can cause riots, so it's handy in crowded places.

Summary: A great training aid- a must have for rescue dog owners.
