Myself and my boyfriend went away to the Cotswolds for a long weekend break with our two border collie dogs. When we got there, were suddenly realised that we had forgotten to bring any toys for our youngest dog Josh. As we were driving around the next day looking for somewhere to walk the dogs, we noticed a Jollyes pet shop and headed on in to stock up on some bits. When we first entered the store, we were approached by a woman who asked us if we had ever used teeth cleaning treats for our dogs. She then explained to us about this new product that has just come out, and gave us a free sample for each dog, along with a little booklet about the new product. This new product is called Greenies.
As any dog owner will know, dogs absolutely hate having their teeth brushed but it is very important to look after their teeth and help them to remove any build up of plaque on them as this can lead to all sorts of illnesses, some quite serious. Greenies claim to help remove any plaque. The Greenies chew is shaped like a toothbrush and apparently it has been specially designed like this because all the groves and different shapes on the chew, means that the dogs have to chew it more and their teeth get cleaned better. The chew also has a soft, slightly bendy texture to it which means that your dog's teeth will sink into the chew and get cleaned at the same time.
Finally, Greenies have green tea extract as one of the ingredients and this helps to freshen their breath.
According to the Greenies website, tests on this product show that if you feed your dog one of these, once a day it will show a 69% reduction in calcium build-up and a 10.5% reduction in plaque build-up.
Range and Cost
Greenies are sold in three sizes, petite, regular and large. They are also sold in various quantities which are believe are packs of three, four, six and seven. They are also sold in treat sizes which are much smaller and each bag of this version probably contains between 20 - 30 chews. We bought some of these treats after the free sample and they cost us £3.79 for a pack of seven from Jollyes. Prices obviously vary between the different sizes but I had a quick scan and found that you can buy them from the greenies website at the following prices: a 3 pack of large chews are £3.50, a pack of four regular chews costs £3.50 and a packet of 6 petite chews also costs £3.50.
Mine (and my Dog's) Opinion
My dogs really seem to enjoy these treats and I do think that they last slightly longer then similar products on the market which I think it due to the fact that they are sticky so the dog has to take more time chewing it. My older dog Dax is sometimes a fussy eater and there are only certain treats he likes but he absolutely loves these. We can tell because every time he likes something, he sneaks off to his basket to eat it because he doesn't want our other dog Josh to get it! My dogs are both young and have really nice teeth so to be honest; I am unable to say whether this product actually helps to clean their teeth!
I would highly recommend these treats although I do feel that they are a little on the expensive side, although when you consider that this product is not just a treat, it is also beneficial to your dog's health then the price isn't too unreasonable. I like the fact that this product is designed to clean their teeth as I think that looking after your dog's teeth is very important. Also, the fact that Dax really enjoys these treats is a bonus as he often turns down other treats that we offer him.
