A friend of mine has a golden Labrador and when she was a puppy she bought her a Kong, I'd never heard of such a dog toy before until she asked me one day if I wanted it for Red as her dog had grown and needed a bigger size. So I gratefully accepted this strange looking toy and wondered what Red would make of it.

~Kong Dog Toy~
The Kong I have is red and made of rubber, it's the smallest size as my Red is quite a small dog, it stands about 4 inches high and from the widest part of the width measures about 7 and a half inches right round, with the smallest part of the width measuring about 5 inches right round. There are two holes in the Kong, one at the top which is the narrowest part of the Kong, this hole is quite small, then at the other end there is a much larger hole, this is where I fill the Kong with little treats etc. It is rather a strange shape which is difficult to explain but it sort of looks like the body of an insect, well to me it does. The rubber that the Kong is made from, is extremely tough and hardwearing, but then it has to be with a dogs teeth gnawing away at it.
The idea is to fill the Kong with treats then let your dog loose with it. When I first gave the Kong to Red, he was very comical to watch, he had no idea what it was, all he knew was, whatever it was it sure smelled good and he wanted to get whatever was inside it, outside it. So he went about pawing it and flicking it around the room jumping backwards and forwards until finally he started to chew away at the Kong getting to the little treats one by one. The Kong was a big success with Red, however I noticed the more he had his Kong the less he was eating of his regular diet, this started to concern me a little so I took the Kong away for a while, but then Red didn't want to eat at all. I decided to fill the Kong with his regular dried food and gave it to him to see if he would eat it. He wasn't sure at first, I guess he saw the Kong and instantly thought "Treats" but he did eat some of his regular food from the Kong, so for a while this was how I had to feed him.
Once my other dog came to live with us, I stopped using the Kong as I thought it would cause grief between them, they didn't like each other as it was and I didn't want to make things worse. Over time both dogs settled and I decided to buy another Kong so they could have one each and hopefully leave each other alone. This worked as they were both quite happy with their own individual Kong's.
I would recommend the Kong Dog Toy, I personally think the idea is great and my dog's seem to love them. I tend to put little treats inside them and seal them with cheese spread, my dogs love that and it keeps them busy for ages.
Red has had his Kong for around 3 and a half years and apart from looking a bit worse for wear he still uses it. I regularly clean the Kong out to keep it clean and fresh, I tend to just scald it out with boiling water, then using one finger with some kitchen towel wrapped around it I wipe around the inside of the Kong, this can be quite tricky with the littlest size Kong but I usually manage to get it clean.
~Other Information~
Like I already mentioned I didn't buy Red's Kong but I did buy Pippa's and they can be found in most pet stores and online, the smallest size cost's around £5.00, but I think it's £5.00 well spent, The Kong's keep my dog's happy so therefore I'm happy.
5 stars for the Kong Dog Toy, it's a great invention in my opinion, it's hardwearing and durable, can't see any reason to give it any less than 5/5.
Thank you for reading my review which may also be posted on other sites.
