Kong Dog Toy
Advantages: They keep my dog happy and relaxed
Disadvantages: The prices can be very high for these
Anyone with a dog knows they always seem to have a favourite treat and toy and amazingly my dog finds the Kong his comfort toy. When we first got our rough collie he had several problems the first being his behaviour.
If you left him in a room on his own he would try and take it apart because he was bored and it was a problem and his behaviour helped him get worse as time progressed. We were told about a Kong toy at the vets and it was an idea I had seen before but never fully explored.
This is a rubber made item which comes in all sizes and colours and the colours match the size of the Kongs. The Kong is made from rubber but it looks very odd in terms of the shape it has because it seems like a ball which has another one on top which is smaller and then a third to top it all off with.
The inside is hollow and this is where you can get inventive because some of the recipes I have used have been outrageous when you see them put inside but they are really good for the dog to get his teeth into.
The first item I tend to put inside is peanut butter this stuff makes my dog go crazy he loves it and craves it sometimes I reckon and this is what I use to hold all the other goodies inside. These goodies consist of items like biscuits and treats he likes all crushed up.
My dog loves simple treats but he tends to like something named pig's noses and these are smelly items I get from a local pet store and I cut pieces of this up and make sure it is stuck inside with the peanut butter.
My dog will then get this when he is going to be alone for a prolonged period and he will chuck it around and watch it bounce, which is does quite often and he just loves taking his time to try and get the food out the middle.
The reason I love this item is one it keeps him occupied for hours on end and he takes his time eating what is inside but also the fact it helps his teeth as a chewing toy.
His teeth have struggled lately with teething so the Kong plays a role as a teething type toy with the rubber and also a treat toy for him where he knows he can gain rewards as well.
You have to find what recipes suit you best as an owner as you know your dog better than anyone else does and to me some of the other ideas I have had are crazy but work.
When it comes to cleaning the Kong I usually just put it under the tap and wash it around because even when the dog has eaten all the food treats inside you could have some hidden which might go stale and it would in my view be bad for the dog to have afterwards.
These are also good for people to have because they are used to help dogs with anxiety and those who have got behavioural problems and they keep the mind of a dog active and they just love playing with them.
The prices I have seen start around £4 and they rise as each size gets bigger which is understandable and to be fair they have a size for all dogs. My belief is you try this item and you will be amazed how much your dog appreciates it.
Summary: A great toy and chew mixed into one
