When we decided to get another dog I wanted to make it as comfortable as possible for the new puppy as it cannot be an easy transition to make from being taken away from your mother and siblings at such a tender age of 8 weeks. Therefore, apart from a comfortable bed which would offer sanctuary and security I also wanted her to have her own toys especially as our older dog has already claimed his. I wanted her to be kept occupied whilst having fun all at the same time but with her own toys in her new bed trying to make her feel as settled as possible.
My puppy toys of choice have mainly been from the brand called Kong. I have been buying their toys for years and years simply because apart from being very well made they are also incredibly durable. My older dog has a wide range of these toys and I thought it was only right that my new addition would have a wide selection also as they have definitely kept my older dog occupied and seem to last the test of time. Fortunately my local pet shop stocks a wide range of Kong toys both for the adult and young dog.
The toy of choice was the Kong Puppy Wubba. I opted for this because it is simply the puppy version of the bigger version for adult dogs. If you are familiar to with the Kong Wubba then the puppy version is no different it is just smaller! If you haven't heard of Kong and you own dogs (and cats) then this is a brand you should definitely become acquainted with! They are a global brand who supply the pet world with a wide range of well manufactured toys which are really supposed to keep a dog (and cat) entertained.
To look at the Kong Puppy Wubba looks just like a miniature version of the adult version. It consists of two balls being bound together in a durable fabric. The top ball is a tennis ball and underneath there is a squeaker ball. It is covered in a tough and durable nylon fabric which is reinforced, is knotted at the bottom and there are three long tails which make the toy easy to pick up and to throw. The toy can come in either pink or pale blue which is rather limited given the fact that the other Kong toys can come in a variety of colours.
Despite its durable nylon fabric the toy is incredibly soft and very light weight which makes it ideal for a puppy who needs a gentle enough toy to protect their teeth. The toy is ideal for throwing ad fetching due to the long tails as its lightweight to throw and it can go a considerable way once thrown but if collected by the dog picking it up at the tennis ball end then the tails make it ideal to hold on to, to get them to release the toy. The squeaker in the toy certainly does attract the dogs attention but I find that my dog hardly ever squeaks the toy!
My dog has had this toy right from 8 weeks and wasn't impressed with it at first and it was left at the back of her crate (her bed is a large crate in my utility room!). However, as soon as she became a little older to enjoy time in the garden without wanting to nap every hour and as soon as she saw my other dog playing 'go fetch' it suddenly twigged that she could actually have a lot of fun with this toy! Even though this toy isn't meant for chewing sessions the fact that puppies do so much little damage to their toys I have no hesitation with her having a good old chew on it but she much prefers chasing after it when out in the garden or in the fields.
Now at 6 months of age my dog is becoming rather large and the Kong Puppy Wubba now looks rather small compared to some of her other toys but she still plays with it regularly out in the garden and although she doesn't care for the squeaker aspect of the toy she much prefers to fling it in the air and catch it or let me throw it for her while she goes and retrieves it. Despite its heavy use in the past month or so the durable ballistic nylon material has lasted really well, there are no nicks or tears in it around the balls or even the tails which I did slightly expect after it gets played with on a daily basis.
My older dog has the adult version of the Kong Puppy Wubba and no doubt I will purchase one for my pup when older but she seems to love this toy. It's durable, strong and well made and provides my dog with hours of fun both outside and inside whilst she lies in her bed. I think this is the perfect toy for a puppy as it is soft enough yet still made from the high quality construction as the adult version, I would also think it is suitable for older dogs who need softer toys. I have also found that these wash well in the washing machine as mine has been in several times due to being so dirty! Definitely a recommendation from me and my pooch!
