Being the owner of 3 dogs it was only a matter of time before I purchased one of these well known Kong toys, and when we became the owners of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier I knew the Kong Xtreme would be a great buy.
The Kong Xtreme is a more durable version of the original red Kongs. Seeing how my Staffie can destroy a knuckle bone in no time at all, I realised the Xtreme version would be the wisest choice. They come in various sizes ranging from small to giant. I opted for the large size which cost me about £13 from an online pet store.
When the Kong arrived I was very impressed at the size and weightiness of it. It turned out to be the perfect size for our Staffie and is made of thick, black rubber. There is quite a lot of room inside the Kong to stuff some exciting treats. You can buy other Kong products for filling your Kong, pastes and biscuits, although I find these a little dearer than other very similar items. I like to put dog biscuit shapes into ours with a little sandwich paste as a treat. You could even fill it with biscuits and paste and then freeze it for a summer treat.
The great thing with a Kong is because of its shape and material it has a decent bounce on it. At first our Staffy just used to roll it round the floor trying to empty it, but now he has mastered the art of picking it up and throwing it round the room. I love to watch him as he makes it bounce around the room trying to get his biscuits out. You may be a little weary of having anything breakable within any distance of it, as it is rather heavy. Though if your like me, your home will be dog proofed of anything they can knock with a wagging tail anyway, let alone anything else.
These Kongs are a very good buy. I have never known a dog who isn't interested them, even if it's only when they are full of food. They provide some stimulation and entertainment and best of all the Kong Xtreme can withstand some pretty hefty chewing. I bought our Kong nearly 2 years ago and it is still in great quality and so worth every penny of its £13 unlike many other dog toys I have purchased.
Summary: A dog toy purchase I didn't live to regret for once.
