Dogs tend to demolish things - some dogs in particular are relentless chomping, chewing machines that munch their way through everything you put in front of them. It's not uncommon to buy a toy that boasts of all sorts of long-lasting benefits, only to see it disappear in a flurry of teeth in seconds.
The Nylabone products are great in this sense - they're made from a super-tough, resilient material that has just enough give to be satisfying and chewable for the dog, but won't fracture, splinter or break. This particular toy is a large, bone-shaped product that ouor dog used to love to chomp on. She'd spend hours chewing relentlessly on it, and after a good period of chewing, the Nylobone was scarred and marked, but hadn't come apart. It's worth replacing every so often, as it can get a bit tatty, but it's a really good, durable toy.
There's no real negative here - since the bone doesn't break apart, there's no mess, and no risk for the dog. All the products in the range seem to be really popular with dogs, and give them a chance to exercise both their teeth and their chewing urges in a safe, clean way. Perhaps the only nuisance is the constant chomping noise from the corner!
This item seems very durable and when I saw it in the shop I thought it would last a long time and win the war against my Rotti and Mali's teeth.
It puts up a good battle but did not win the war. To be fare though it has given the best fight yet.
I bought the three different sizes for my dogs, largest for the Rotti, medium for the Lab and small for the Mali whenshe was a pup. They aren't cheap, I paid £3 for the small, £5 for the medium and £7 for the large.
The bones were too hard for the Lab and she gave her's up to the Mali who decided that her puppy one was too small!
They have been chewing them for about 6 months now and have ground them down by about 50% so pretty strong to be honest.
These are better than rawhides as they don't leave a nasty white glue on the carpet when they chew them. They dont leave any mark on the floor which is nice. They do tend to pick up hairs if left on the carpet but my dogs chew them so reguarly that they dont really get a chance to collect hair!
Be warned though, if you happen to stand on them by accident in bare feet you will be cursing them as it hurts!!
Even though these were expensive I will b buying them again once they have chewed it more as it does keep them entertained and does keep teeth clean.
The shavings of the bone which the dogs chew off are digestable too so no worries to them swallowing any little bits.
Be warned, you can get another Nyrobone which has Chicken flavour through the middle. When this one is chewed the whole house smells of chicken stock! Dogs love it though!
As some of you will already know, early last year my old staffy had to be put down and we ended up getting another staffy only a month later as we so missed having a dog about the house. Our new staffy was 15 months old and had already been re-homed a couple of times. She appears to have been trained to hunt, and was covered in deep puncture wounds, whether from a dog fight ( although she has no interest in fighting other dogs, that does not mean she couldn't get chewed up) or from a fox or badger, and had also broken her two upper canines. This meant she did not chew anything .... at first....
Now eight months on her mouth has healed and she can chew, in fact we have had to move her to pen when outdoors alone as she is eating the kids bicycles. But in the house she only chews this bone. Even when she could not chew, she carried it everywhere. I am sure she was well cared for once as she obviously knows pets at home is for toys and takes little time to find the toy department! This came in the post and I swear she smelled it through all the packaging. She has never before or since had an interest in post, but when this cam she was so excited and wiggling all over as I ripped open the parcel. She obviously loves this toy.
Although she could not chew at first, she has had this eight months and spends hours chewing on it at night. It is beginning to wear, and I'll get her a new one in a couple of months. But for anything to last months with a staffy who chews excessively is a miracle! It costs £6.25 including shipping from Amazon, but this is money well spent when you consider what a new suite could cost! It also is nice that she has something she enjoys so much, and even buying two a year is okay with me if the dog is going to get so much enjoyment from it.
In addition to being a fun toy and saving your furniture though, this is also a great dental aid. In fact having good quality chews is meat to be one of the major factors in how good your dogs dental health will be. Especially with my dog having two canines already broken off ( the vet advised us to leave them as the surgery to remove canines is complicated and painful) keeping her teeth clean is really important. As the dog chews this toy it creates little nubs which are meant to act as a tooth brush.
I have always kept a Staffy, and all my Staffies have had a nylabone chew. With most they would last a couple of years. All of them have enjoyed them, although none quite so much as Tora. I would recommend Nylabone to all dog owners, but if you have a strong jawed breed, they become an absolute must have item.
I am sure if Tora could speak she would give this 5 stars, so I will do the same.
