“ Brand: Pets at Home / Type: Disinfectant / Cleaning Products - Wipes „
Our cat is our most loved pet (ever!) and that is probably obvious if you have read any of my past reviews. We like to ensure that she is well cared for and this means that she has two litter trays in our home at the moment. She can always have access to a toilet wherever she is and we don't have to worry about any accidents or her having to wait to access a toilet if one of our hall doors is accidentally closed by a person or draft.
Cleaning a litter tray is never a very pleasant job but we do try our best to make it as simple as possible. We have tried a number of litters over the past year in our quest to find the ideal litter and now we have a few that we will use regularly depending on stock availability when we are stocking up. We have tried litter tray liners, bags and other things in the past to find something that will make emptying the litter tray less of a disgusting job, however most of these products have let us down along the way. This is what prompted me to pick up these litter tray wipes from Pets at Home. We visit Pets at Home around once a month to stock up on provisions for our cat and other pets. These wipes cost £1.99 and are known as 'antimicrobial litter tray wipes'.
The packaging for this is very simple and shows a picture of a cat. There is a peel back tab and the wipes are easily accessed.
Each wipe is quite a generous size and more than covers the palm of my hand. These wipes work by coating the litter tray with 'Byotrol' that is designed to destroy bacteria, clean the tray and stop germs in their tracks. These wipes make wiping my cats litter tray very simple. All I do is remove the mess using my scoop, shower out the litter tray and then I use one of these wipes to ensure that the tray is clean before filling it back up with fresh litter.
I will say that my cats litter tray comes up very clean with these wipes but I have not noticed any different in the smell of her litter tray. I am happy enough with the wipes as the price is not prohibitive for what they are and they help me to ensure that my cat has a clean environment to do her 'business' in. We use a packet of these around every month because we have two litter trays that we are emptying regularly. I like the price of these and the quality of the wipes. I do not have to worry about the wipes ripping either as they are thick and strong. We will continue to buy these from Pets at Home in the future unless I find something cheaper to use and I would firmly recommend them.
All cat owners will know just how bad a cat litter tray can smell and how much of a pain in can be to clean when your little fluffy bundle of joy is rushing around your feet or trying to use the tray while you clean it (maybe thats just me?!) Anything that makes that task a bit more convenient is welcome into my home and this is where I came across the Pets at Home Antimicrobial Litter Tray wipes.
By coating the litter tray with Byotrol the wipes promise to destroy bacteria and deodorise the tray. Brilliant but what is Byotrol?? Well, after a bit of research, Byotrol is a combination of biocides and polymers whose structures form in such a way that an invisible film is left behind to reduce.prevent the regrowth of bacteria. If you want to read more please visit the Byotrol website (byotrol.co.uk) but please be warned that it is very scientific and full of jargon - most of which goes well over my head. Please be assured that the wipes are safe to use - Byotrol is used in most industries from hospital cleaning through to bakeries and is certified against the following:
The products are covered and included in the European BPD & REACH
EPA and FDA in the United States
Byotrol formulations have been tested against the most stringent test methodologies including BS:EN 1276 Standard, BS:EN 13697 Standard, BS:EN 1650 Standard, BS:EN 14476 Standard, Residual Abrasion Testing methodologies, alongside many other tests. (like I said jargon!)
So know that we all know how great Byotrol is, these wipes must be amazing right?
I'm not entirely convinced. Yes they are great for wiping the litter tray and I have no doubt that they protect against bacteria but as for the deodorising properties I didn't notice any difference at all. I'm sure that as you're reading this you are well aware of the nasty smells that can come from a litter tray - it's definitely going to take more than a wipe to get rid of the smell for my nostrils.
Each pack of wipes contains 12 wipes which lasted me about 3 weeks (my kitten is currently indoors so I have to clean his tray quite frequently) for outdoor cats you may only need to use 2-3 a week so you could get over a month out of the pack. Each wipe is thick and a large size - about twice as big as a standard baby wipe. This is great because it means you can wipe around the tray quickly without the wipe splitting or heaven forbid your hand making contact with the tray.
Priced at £1.99 these wipes are an absolute bargain considering the length of time they last, some sprays and equivalents can cost twice as much. As the name suggests, these are only available in Pets at Home but you can reserve them online or order online - there is an unspecified delivery charge but for a £1.99 pack of wipes I wouldn't bother unless it was part of a larger order.
So would I buy these again? Without a doubt. Even though the wipes don't eliminate the odours like they promise, I still feel that they work at reducing bacteria which is ultimately what I want. An air freshner or scented candle tend to keep my home smelling nice so I'll forgive the wipes.
Pets at Home Antimicrobial Litter Tray Wipes
These wipes come in a resealable plastic packet which will cost you £1.99. They should be available from all Pets at Home stores.
As anyone who reads my reviews will know (and thank you very much, I really appreciate all reads, rates and comments), I share my home with 2 rather pampered Siamese cats. They are house cats which means of course, they have to use a litter tray.
When I bought these wipes, I must confess that I was feeling a little lazy. Let's face it, it doesn't really take very long to wash out a litter tray with an antibacterial wash but sometimes, when you are in a hurry, it can be really handy to just use a wipe and know that you have the same level or protection against germs and bacteria.
These wipes contain byotrol which helps tp clean and also neutralise smells, which as anyone who has a litter tray will know, is something that is a definite bonus. There is a light scent to the wipes which is quite natural and doesn't seem to offend my cats at all. It doesn't really last very long of course but still leaves the tray smelling fresh upon cleaning.
I did find that the wipes were a little small though and 1 sometimes wasn't enough. For this reason, even for occasional use, they didn't really last very long. I have just read a review on here (the one before mine, have a look!) where the reviewer explaines that they have bought a spray from Pets at Home containing the same ingredients as these wipes. Next time I am there, I will definetely look out for this as it seems a more cost effective way to buy.
Overall, these wipes are a great and handy idea but they are let down by the price and the fact that they don't last very long. If you purchase the spray instead though, you should get much better value for money so that is something to look out for.
These Pets at Home Antimicrobial Litter Tray Wipes are a simple little product that we have used as an easy care, throw away cleaning wipe when cleaning out our cats litter trays. Without wanting to be too graphic we have found that they are thick enough to clean most spills and stains that end up on the trays, without too much fuss. They also don't rip or tear easily.
The wipes work well and usually just one wipe is enough to give one litter tray a spruce up. We have found that best results are on a pre rinsed tray that has had the contents removed. However we have at times also used them on a just emptied tray that has residue left on it and they are thick enough to use for that too. Although the other option works best.
As the wipes have a product called Byotrol in them they can work well to neutralize any left over smells after rinsing the litter trays. The addition of Byotrol means that the wipes can help to deodorise and clean at the same time, whilst cutting down on harmful bacteria that may have built up. This is the man reason we opted for them as we wanted the litter trays to be kept hygienically clean.
The wipes are sealed in a simple plastic pack with an easy to use re-sealable cover. This does help to keep them moist when awaiting use. We have found the fragrance used in the wipes to be a pleasant smelling pine type scent. It gives a light clean smell to the litter trays when we have cleaned them with these wipes that lingers for a short while after use.
These Pets at Home Antimicrobial Litter Tray Wipes are a handy product to have but do have a down side which is the price. At £1.99 for a small pack of wipes that can clean just one tray a piece, they can be an expensive product to use. I find the price a bit of a let down really, as if using these on a daily basis for a number of litter trays it can work out rather expensive.
On the plus side we have found that we like the antimicrobial aspect of the wipes and when we last visited store to pick up some more of these, we noticed that there is also a 500ml spray product that contains the same antibacterial properties. It also has the same light pine fragrance to it and at £3.99 for the whole bottle it works out at better value than the wipes.
We have been using this product instead with some cheap supermarket wipes and spraying the wipes with the liquid prior to use. This gives a very similar effect so I would recommend that more than buying these wipes, as pound for pound we have gotten more use out of the spray than these wipes.
The Pets at Home Antimicrobial Litter Tray Wipes are a good product that we have found easy to use. They do give a nice light fresh clean finish and are something we liked. The only down side has to be the fact that at £1.99 they do work out expensive to buy for daily use. For that reason the Pets at Home Antimicrobial Litter Tray Wipes have to lose 2 stars and so get a 3 star rating.
