Advantages: Strong, large, scented, dark coloured, tie handles, good value for money
Disadvantages: You'll still get some idiot dog owners who don't use them!!
These animal waste collection bags are part of pet shop giant Pets At Home, own brand range of products, which includes a variety of dry and wet foods, treats, grooming equipment and training aids for a variety of animals including cats, dogs, fish, birds and small animals.
*The product itself*
There are very few things in the world that I hate more than owners who do not clean up after their dogs, it absolutely makes my blood boil- I'm sure they'd be the first to complain if they stepped in a pile of dogs mess, yet the irresponsible idiots still allow their beloved mutt to mess wherever it likes, and then don't clean it up afterwards- its disgusting, unhygienic, hazardous, lazy and just damn right rude and if I see people leaving their dogs mess, then I'm afraid I'll tell them that too! Sod the excuses of ''Oh, I can't bend down because of my back'', or ''I forgot to bring a bag with me''- if your health doesn't allow you to have a dog, or you're that much of a twit you forget to bring a mess bag when walking your dog, then sorry but you shouldn't be allowed to own one, that's the way I see.
Now of course I don't enjoy picking up dog mess, I mean, who does?! But I know its something I need to do- I chose to have the two hairy beasts in my life, so it's my responsibility to clean up after them, there's no two ways about it, it's one of the very few downsides that comes with owning a dog. It's obviously not a pleasant job, so I am on the constant look out for products to make the job a bit more bearable, even if it's just a tiny bit more so! One product which I always now buy are these Scented Poop Bags, from Pets At Home.
They're part of their range of own brand products, which was released a good few years back now but they seem to be adding to it constantly, I first brought these bags when Benson was a puppy, and he's nearing 4 years old now, so this particular product has definitely been around a few years at least.
The product is pretty much self explanatory really, as the name suggests, they are bags designed to be used to pick up and then keep your dogs waste securely contained until it can be disposed of. They're made from plastic, much thicker than that of a nappy bag or sandwich bag, which both seem to be popular to pick up dog waste with, so there is no or very little chance of the bags splitting mid job, but then they easily squash down very small and very flat to carry in your pocket until needed. They also have the added advantage of being citronella scented to help minimise the smell of the contents, and are also a dark colour, which is nice when compared to the see through nappy or sandwich bags as you can't see the contents inside, which makes it slightly more pleasant to carry until you find a bin.
*Packaging*
The bags come in a very basically designed silver sachet which has a plastic flip top lid which can be opened to gain access to the bags- similar in design to some packets of wet wipes. On the flip top lid is a small sticker telling with Pets At Homes logo and the product name, and on the underside of the packet you will find a contact address should you have any questions or complaints.
*Price & Availability*
Obviously, being a Pets At Home own branded product, these bags are only available in their stores, or on their website. A packet, which contains 50 bags, will cost you £1.95, or they have a permanent offer on which enables two packs to be purchased for £3.
*My opinion*
I think I made my opinion of people who don't pick up their dogs wastes very clear earlier! I absolutely detest it, it spoils the environment for everyone, harbours horrible diseases and lastly, gives all dog owners, even the responsible ones, a bad name, and helps contribute to the sad trend of dogs now being banned from some walking locations and many beaches, although I can see very clearly why, as stepping in dog mess is not a nice experience for anyone, whether you are a fellow dog owner or not.
I like to think of myself as a responsible dog owner- my dogs are well trained, I keep them on leads when they should be, and I don't allow them to run up to other people or dogs uninvited, and I especially never leave their mess behind. Like I mentioned earlier, I've been using these bags for around 4 years now, and they help make a very unpleasant job, just that tiny bit more bearable. The bags are quite large- easy enough to turn inside out and insert a hand to pick up the mess, and they are large and strong enough to securely hold the dinosaur sized mess Grace and Benson are capable of producing. The tie handles make the bags very easy to tie, and then nice and easy to carry until you find a bin, and the dark coloured design of the bags makes it less embarrassing to do so aswell. The citronella scent of the bags is very strong aswell, which is a good thing, if I'm unable to find a bin, which can sometimes be the case when walking in very rural locations, or on beaches, then the scent masks the smell and makes the used bags a little less offending to put in my car and take home to dispose of.
In all the years I've been using these bags, they've never split once and I'm confident they never will do either, they're very strong and even if my nails are slightly longer, we've thankfully never had an accident of my nails going through the bags! The fact that the bags are on permanent offer too is also brilliant, not only will it hopefully encourage people to buy the bags to clean up after their dog, it also saves a good bit of money, I buy a couple of packs a month for just £3 and that'll do Grace and Benson for the duration of the month, if not longer.
I'll also use them for cleaning up after my two cats in the garden, or to remove solid waste from their litter tray on the rare occasion they use it and the bags cope with that task just as well, so its not just dog owners these bags are marketed at.
All in all, an excellent product. They may be a bit more expensive than nappy/sandwich bags but surely it's worth paying that bit more for peace of mind that the bags won't split half way through the job- I've had to use the Bob Martin or Pedigree Care bags before if when we've ran out of the Pets At Home ones, and the store had none in stock, and even though they cost more than these ones, both brands have split at one point or another.
Summary: Your dog = you clean up the mess!
