Poundland Ceramic Dog Bowl
Advantages: Excellent value - Attractive design - Works well..
Disadvantages: None for me (or my girl!)
I purchased a couple of assorted pet supplies from a local branch of Poundland a few months ago, one of which was their "Ceramic Dog Bowl." I did think the bowl was rather attractive, especially given its robust and sturdy ceramic material.
The reason for my purchase was to provide a new water bowl for my elderly feline. My cat is approaching her 20th year and suffers with a variety of health conditions as a result of her old age, one of which is unfortunately renal failure. This condition causes my girl to drink huge amounts of water, and I had felt that the existing water bowl she had was slightly shallow for this purpose. I had actually been rather alarmed to discover the previous bowl was almost empty on one occasion, due to my girl continuously lapping from the bowl throughout the day. It is imperative that cats with renal failure have access to as much water as they wish, and so as a temporary measure, I immediately put out a second bowl to ensure she didn't run out of fresh water if she was left to her own devices. It was clear that a larger receptacle was needed in the long term, however.
I happened upon the Ceramic Dog Bowl purely by chance, when I was purchasing some cat food and treats for my (spoiled!) feline in store. The bowl stood out to me from the shelf as it is a pretty blue colour, which caught my eye even though it is quite pale, perhaps best described as being 'sky' blue. The bowl was only available in the blue shade, and I didn't notice the pink bowls as shown in the Dooyoo picture above, so I do believe the availability and choice of shades available will differ from branch to branch. The bowl only cost £1 of course, which I thought was a bit of a bargain given it's rather attractive appearance.
Being completely circular in shape, the bowl's background is a pale blue colour as described previously, upon which there is a decorative 'Paw Print' design going around the outside of the bowl. This Paw Print design is detailed in a bold black colour which offers an attractive contrast against the blue, and there is a matching border going around the 'lip' of the bowl which gives it a contrasting finish. It is fair to say that the bowl is attractive enough, and certainly more attractive than many of the bowls my girl already owns.
It did occur to me whether the Poundland bowl was going to be suitable for my cat as it is sold as a Dog bowl, and its size is slightly bigger than most of the other cat bowls my girl has at home. In saying that, however, it's slightly larger-than-usual size was ideal for my requirements at the time, given the bowls intended use was purely to hold water - and a large quantity, at that. In terms of the bowl's suitability for dogs, I would have thought that small dogs would have encountered no problems with drinking or eating from the bowl, but medium-sized and indeed, larger dogs may find it more cumbersome to use, and would probably benefit from having a larger dish instead.
The Poundland bowl is made of a ceramic material but it is not the heaviest and most solid that I have ever purchased, which is presumably down to the product's price and quality. That is not to say that it is unfit for purpose - far from it, in fact - but I do think it is worth mentioning that you do get what you pay for with some items such as this. For our needs however, the bowl has performed beautifully, and certainly much better than my girl's previous model which was made of plastic. Not only did this previous model prove to be rather insufficient in terms of capacity, but it performed rather poorly in coping with my girl's enthusiastic drinking sessions, during which times she will often lap from the bowl with such zeal that the bowl could be easily knocked or upturned by her slender feline frame. This has never happened with the ceramic bowl of course, as its sturdy, robust body is just too heavy to be moved by a cat... so, perfect for us!
In terms of robustness, I can happily say that the bowl has suffered nothing in the way of major wear and tear during the past few months and actually it has lasted better than I expected, considering the low sum paid. I expected the bold black 'Paw Print' design to chip quite easily and perhaps experience flaking of some sort but this has not happened so far. Neither does the blue ceramic look chipped or even particularly faded, and I can't really see anything particularly noticeable in terms of wear and tear if I'm being honest.
The bowl is easily washed along with my girls other bowls and feeding dishes, with a small amount of detergent and some hot water. A sponge scourer will usually suffice when cleaning my girl's bowls, and I find the Poundland bowl cleans very easily with very little effort being required. The bowl is allowed to air dry before being used the following day. I'm not sure I would risk putting the bowl in the dishwasher as it is breakable if handled too roughly of course, and I would think that the black design may chip off with continued washing via this method, but this is down to personal choice of course.
I have nothing negative to report about this little bowl from Poundland and I have every intention of purchasing another one the next time I am shopping in my local branch. I think it offers excellent value for money and it has been so useful that it has been used almost every day. I cannot recommend it highly enough and so feel that full marks in the product rating score are absolutely deserved.... Excellent!
