When you travel with dogs its vitally important to carry lots of water around with you. I always make sure I have some water for Eddie and its especially important in this hot weather to keep them properly hydrated. He runs round like a crazy dog sometimes and comes back to us panting extremely hard like he's never had a drink in his life so water is very important for him too.
Its a pain sometime though if we take Eddie out for the day to carry water, a water bowl etc etc so thats why this water bottle from the RAC is great. I got it in an RAC car pack that also included a dog car seat cover and a window vent guard. I initially bought the pack just for the car seat cover as I needed this for my new car when I took Eddie out and didn't really think I would use the bottle but its been a really good tool and one I'm now glad that I got.
The water bottle is really cleverly made and designed. The bottle is just a regular plastic water bottle but it sits in a plastic case which opens up and actually becomes a little water tray that allows your dog to drink out of it. I find this really handy as it means you do not have to bring a separate water bowl to put the water in, you can just use this and then it folds back away for your to store it easily and without mess. That way like I've said above you do not need to bring lots of things out with you just for your dog to have a drink.
I find the case and bottle will stand up well on their own once you have added the water to the case but if you have a bit of an over zealous dog the whole thing does have the ability to tip over quite easily so I find its better if I hold it and let Eddie drink out of it, ok this is a bit of a pain sometimes but we are on the go anyway and he is just having a quick water break so its not too much of a hassle. I also find it best not to fill the water up to its capacity as it does leak a little bit and its better to keep it upright when you are transporting it.
The bottle will hold 0.5 litres of water which is enough for a short journey and half a day out I would say. Obviously you can take more water with you and fill this bottle up but for a short time this is plenty for us. A clever idea and a great one for your dog.
This travel water bottle essentially a water bottle and a tray which acts as a water bowl for the dog. It's attached for ease of use and mine has an attachment on top of it too so it can just fix onto your belt for more ease. Though I've found this to be a bit bulky on my hip and I prefer to just carry it in a bag anyway. To use this all you need to do is fill the water bottle up and screw it back on to the attachment. When you want to use it just lift it facing the tray and squeeze water into the tray for the dog to then drink.
I think I recall picking this thing up for just under £4. It may not seem like the best deal in the world for what is essentially a plastic bottle and try, but I've gotten a lot of use out of it and so I've definitely had my money's worth.
I've only experience using this product with a Westie so it's hard to estimate whether or not it will hold enough water for the average dog on a log walk of quite a few hours.
A problem you may anticipate with this product as it does contain water is that it could leak, especially since it has a easy simple pour out function. I've never personally experienced any leakages from the product and therefore nor mess either. And on that note I haven't experienced any problems with the product in terms of it breaking and the plastic cracking.
The alternative to this product is just carrying a separate bottle and water bowl which would save you money. But I honestly believe this is worth buying and using as it's much easier to use, less bulky and all compact.
Just before I start I requested this product which is a different brand and I was redirected to this product which is exactly the same however branded by the RAC and probably more expensive.
I have already reviewed the dog water bowl which is great product if you are taking your dog on holiday, and it is static, however that is not quite ideal when you are on the go with your pooch, especially some of the walks that we take Sandy on, you need to be equipped with some water for your dog to ensure that they keep hydrated through their walks.
Thats where the travel water bowl comes in, its a great invention and I couldn't go on a walk without Sandy's as he expects to have drinks throughout his walks since we have started using this.
How to use
The product itself comes in to parts, one a water bottle, which us humans would use ourselves and you just fill this bottle full of water, and two a dish. The dish is clipped to the water bottle however it can be removed when you are filling the water up. When you come to give your dog a drink, you just lift the bottle up so it is vertical to the dih, squeeze the desired amount of water into the dish and then hold for the dog to drink.
This item is compact and has a carry handle on it so it's not too much trouble to take it on a walk with you. YOu are also not limited to how much water you give you dog, if you squeeze a certain amount of water into the bowl, you just squeeze some more into the bowl until they have had enough, this then has les wastage and more left for your dog to have anothe drink whilst of his/her walk. Other benefits is that is generally catering for your dogs needs and requirements. HOw many people actually take a source of hydration of their walks for their pets? This is convenient and easy to use and keeps your dog happy.
Well believe it or not, I actually bought this from Poundland for yes you got it, just a quid, so I bought a couple, one to keep in the house for when we go out on a normal walk and one to keep in the car for on his travels if we ever forgot the other one. I have seen them a lot more expensive in place, however these ones are a lot better quality but for a pound it does the job and Sandy knows no different how much it costs, just that he is having a more pleasurable walk especially in the hot weather.
A grreat product that is must have with all dog owners!!
I have bought a few of these over the last few summers for my dog. I think they are great for bringing along on a day out with your dog. They are easy to use, you generally just turn the bottle upside down and squeeze the water out and it runs into the bottom of the bottle cover to allow the dog to get to the water.
On hot day walks I usually bring a drink of water for myself so think it is just as important to bring this along for my dog. The only downside for me is the weight and I have also purchased collapsible water bowls for my dog but this can be more expensive as I have had to buy bottled water a few times!
I managed to pick my Rac bright orange bottle up for around £3 and have paid similar to other on the go bottles from pets at home.
*What is the RAC Travel Water Bottle?*
This on-the-go dog water bottle is produced by the car company RAC and is part of their safe travel with dogs range which also includes car boot guards, window grills and car seat covers, all designed to make travelling with your dog both safer and easier.
*The product itself*
On first impressions, the design of the product is actually quite good, it consists of a 500ml clear plastic bottle attached to an orange plastic tray. The idea is that you fill the bottle with fresh water before going on your dog walk or car journey, then screw the bottle back onto the tray and its ready to go. When you want to offer your dog a drink you simply squeeze the water from the bottle into the tray, which acts as a bowl for your dog to drink from, the tray then folds up back up making the item compact, there is an added advantage of a clip on one end which makes it easier to carry or attach to your belt loop (the filled product is quite heavy though so watch it doesn't pull your trousers down!).
The travel water bottle comes attached to a piece of orange cardboard which is very eye catching, on the back you will find a ten helpful hints to help give you ideas for safe car travel with your dog, all the packaging can be recycled.
*Price & Availability*
I purchased this directly from the RAC website for £8.99, although I have since seen it much cheaper in many pet shops and online stores. They were also on sale very cheaply at Crufts this year.
Myself and my dogs enjoy long walks everyday, often for many miles and several hours at a time, and it is of course as important for dogs as it is for us humans to stay well hydrated during exercise. Fed up of carrying around a bowl and a separate bottle, when I spotted this product whilst looking for car-boot guards, I ordered it straight away. When it arrived it came on the next dog walk with us, it was very easy to fill, didn't leak whilst I was carrying it and when I stopped to give the dogs a drink, the water came out very easily.
But with three dogs, two of them being very big, the bottle just doesn't hold enough water, and Grace, who being a Rottweiler has a short snout found it very difficult to drink from the narrow tray. So now, I generally just use the bottle for the madam that is Ruby, and the other two are quite happy to drink from streams (of course Ruby is far to dignified to drink from a stream).
*Ease of cleaning*
It's plastic so obviously very easy to clean, a quick scrub with washing liquid and warm water is all it needs. The bottle cannot be put in the dishwasher.
*Pro's & Con's*
+ A very good idea- compact and easy to carry.
+ Helps keep dogs hydrated on walks or car journeys
+ Made from strong durable plastic, and easy to clean
+ My one doesn't leak (although I've heard a lot can so best to keep them upright when in the car)
+ Good if there really isn't any other clean places for your dog to drink from
- The 500ml capacity isn't enough if you have a large or more than one dog
- Short nosed dogs can find it hard to drink from. Grace struggled but my friends Shih Tzu found it impossible
- It doesn't stand up on its own so you will need to hold it whilst your dog drinks (therefore getting your hand covered in slobber, water ect- or maybe my dogs are just piglets when it comes to drinking)
- If you squeeze too much water into the tray and your dog doesn't drink it all, it cannot be poured back into the bottle
What is it?
This is a Travel Water Bottle for dogs from the RAC range of dog car travel products. The range includes water bottle, car seat covers, front seat guard and window guards.
It is a 0.5 litre plastic water bottle with a drinking bowl attached. The water bottle folds into the bowl when not in use so only takes up the size of a bottle so its easy to store and carry. Its ideal to use when travelling with your dog on journeys. The pack comes with photo instructions on the packaging to show you how to use it but its not difficult.
How do you use it?
Before leaving home fill the water bottle with fresh water from the tap. Screw the bottle onto the cap which is attached to the bowl. Keep the bottle upright at theis point until its firmly attached. When your dog needs a drink lift the bottle up from the bowl and squeeze some water out. The water will come through the cap and into the bowl. You have to hold the bottle to enable your dog to drink from the bowl. If you put it on the ground the weight of the water bottle will cause the bowl to tip so keep a hold of it whilst your dog drinks. Once your dog has had enough to drink tip any excess water out of the bowl (there shouldnt be too much as you just gently keep squeezing the water into the bowl until your dog has had enough) and then fold the bottle back into the bowl and its ready for the next time.
When would you use it?
Whenever you go on a car journey, if youre out for the day or for a long walk. We take it with us when we go to training classes as our dog Oscar gets quite thirsty with all that hard work and biscuits! If youre out walking it fits neatly into your rucksack or when youre in the car we put it into the pocket of the seats.
Any other features?
It has a storage clip if you want to hang it on something, I guess you could hang it on the outside of your rucksack. The packaging also comes with guidelines from the Kennel Club for road travel with your dog, its a 10 point plan of how to make your dogs car journeys more bearable for you and for the dog.
What does it cost?
It costs around £3.49
Where can I buy it?
I have seen if for sale in larger pet stores such as Pets At Home. Its also available from many of the online pet stores. It is also on sale on the RAC website and they offer members a 10% discount.
1. Very useful product. Unlike many gadgets for pets you will use this one a lot.
2. Gives you a happy and healthy dog. Its important dogs drink regularly
3. Very portable due to its compact size. You only need one bottle whereas before you would need a bottle of water and a separate bowl.
4. Not expensive.
1. My bottle leaks a bit if you tip it onto its side. However this may just be a fault with my bottle as I have spoken to other people who dont have this problem. I just ensure the bottle stays upright when I am carrying it.
2. Only holds 0.5litres so if you have 2 dogs or one thirsty dog you need to keep filling it up.
